A different perspective...

On 2nd December 2012 we played Hucclecote Youth in a league match losing 6-0. A game possibly best forgotten. If you look back at the match report the impact of the pitch was well documented and particularly how we didn't really get to grips with it. If you read the Hucclecote match report from that same game it gives a similar view and acknowledges how they coped better. You can read their match report here.

Clean sheet!

LRFC Cougars (9) V (0) Cashes Green

Naunton Park

3rd February 2013

Today was the rearanged league fixture against Cashes Green. On a sticky Naunton Park pitch we lined up in a 3-5-2 formation. Will F in goal, a back three of Harvey, Willbo and George. The midfield 5 was Louis, Freddie, Jacob, Sam and Daniel with the Luca and Max T up front. Max P started the game on the bench.

Looking at the league table suggested that this would be a tough game but one that was winable. While Cashes were yet to win a game they had scored in all their fixtures. We kicked off and were immediately applying pressure. Daniel, Louis and Luca all dancing to Max T's tune as he caressed and flicked the ball around with unerring accuracy. For the first 10 minutes he seemed to use nothing but the outside of his foot.

Despite the early pressure we lacked the breakthrough with Cashes defending stoutly and looking powerful on the break. The tall number 8 for Cashes catching the eye least not for his size but for his power and directness. At 0-0 he made a lung busting run only to see his well struck shot saved by Will. The opening goal came from the boot of Max T. Reminiscent of Ricky Villa in the 1981 FA Cup final he danced through the penalty area evading four tackles to slot the ball in at the near post. 1-0.

Max' opening goal

This immediately settled the team down and a second was quick to come. Daniel scoring the first of what would be an excellent hat-trick. It seems that we have found his perfect position where on the right as part of a midfield 5 he can use his power and strength to get forward and unleash lightning bolts from his feet (or at least his right foot ;)) Another example of how players at this age develop into different positions.

2-0 up and bar the odd break seemingly in control. What was pleasing about the performance was that we passed the ball and used it well. We did not panic in possession playing short passes to team mates in space then looking to hit the wide and front players. At the back Willbo, playing in the centre, was heard to be talking and keeping things tight. With George and Harvey either side of him they looked very strong even under pressure.

The third goal came from Louis and (i think) it may have even been his right foot. This was a good reward for a performance where he showed all his skill and touch on the left wing. With a low centre of gravity the ball just sticks to his feet. This was, overall, another pleasing thing about the performance as we shared the scoring. A lot of our goals come from Daniel and Luca. Today Max T, Max P, Freddie (scoring the final goal with a lovely shimmy) and Louis all got on the score sheet too.

The team play today was really pleasing, the lads played the way they were facing and worked hard. No-frills defending when it was needed but also then showing good decision making to bring it out when there was an opportunity. Jacob and George continue to tackle everything that moves but today the whole team stepped up and did the hard work too.

The goals we scored today, much like against Cleeve, were team goals. So play building from the back and played through midfield. Great interplay between the front players and a goal. That was true today for most of the goals.

Max T was the MotM as his inspired goal at the start settled the team and set us on the way. There were, though lots of great performances. The back-3 were excellent, Will in goal made some important saves to keep us in the match and get his deserved clean sheet. The midfield 5 were full of running and played the ball neatly between them. Up front with the pace and guile we have we always look dangerous. We made a lot of changes today without really upsetting the pattern of play or the balance of the team.

At the final whistle we had won 9-0 yet the game never felt like that type of match. When Cashes had the ball they did threaten us without really getting close enough to cause problems. When they did we defended well enough to prevent them scoring and in Will have a great keeper. At the start of rht esecond half they put us under a fair bit of pressure but without creating the clear cut chances that they needed.

Two final thoughts, the referee today had an excellent match. It's nice to see a referee not frightenend of giving free kicks. I was also pleased with the respect we continue to show our opponents and officials. When all around are losing their heads we do not.
