End of Year...

As we approach the end of the year there's a few things to highlight and reflect on....

Sponsorship
This season the LRFC Cougars are very proud to announce that we have signed a two-year kit and training top sponsorship deal with Listers of Cheltenham. We have the Lexus branding on the football shirts with Toyota on the training tops. This is an excellent opportunity for the team and we hope to give Listers some excellent exposure through the next couple of seasons.

Mid Season
The league season has been a tough start for us with us already playing the two strongest teams in the division, Churchdown both home and away and Hucclecote at home. While the result in those games was rarely in doubt it would have been nice to be more competitive which with a full squad we definitely would have been. Availability of the squad has been difficult and has a more marked impact on us than in previous seasons. This has been down to the lads having many more commitments plus sickness and injury all playing a part.

What is important though is that although it has been far from the easiest of starts the lads have remained positive and upbeat and started to show that they will play for each other and support each other. We are already this season a much stronger team than we were at the start.

The season resumes early in January with a double-header against Bishops Cleeve, lets start how we finished this year with an excellent performance against GVR and get back up the league.

Stats
We have played 5 league games winning 1, drawing 1 and losing 3. We have scored 19 goals (in all competitions) this season with 6 Cougars all getting on the scoresheet (and one being an own goal!). The current goal scorer chart looks like this:
Luca - 6
Daniel H - 5
Max T - 3
Max P - 2
Jacob and Harvey - 1 each

Players
As has been mentioned player availability has been difficult so far this season. With that in mind we could do with signing one or two players. If you know of someone interested in playing for us or joining us then please pass on my contact details so that a trial can be organised. We have the January transfer window so see what you can do!

Training
Apologies to all today, i only found out today that training was off after i had arrived there myself.

We are now on Christmas break and will resume on Wednesday 2nd January. This ahead of our next fixture on 6th January. All details are in the calendar available on this website.

As we are on break over Christmas here's a target for the lads - over the next fortnight can they all manage four 15-20 minute runs? Get them to post onto the LRFC Facebook page if they do this.

Support of Parents...
Thanks for your continued support, i regularly get comments from other managers about how you all put up the nets and flags, check the pitch and run the line. It's a much wider team effort and something that is never taken for granted.

Merry Christmas to all and a Prosperous New Year!

9th-Dec-2012 - LRFC Cougars (2) V (2) GVR

Sunday 9th December
LRFC Cougars (2) V (2) GVR
Naunton Park

What a difference a week makes. Following last week's drubbing at the hands of Hucclecote we needed to show more strength in possession and to defend more as a team from front to back. The team was set up in a 4-4-1-1 formation. With Will in goal and captaining the side the back four (right to left) Sam, Paddy, Willbo and Harvey. Across the midfield Daniel H, Freddie, Jacob and Luca. Max P was at the tip of the diamond with Louis ploughing a lone furrow up front. On the bench Dan G.

From the kick-off GVR started to apply pressure. While we kept our lines clear we struggled to get the final break we needed in possession. The opening goal came early witha  long run by the striker, with HPA in pursuit he slotted past Will in goal to put them 1-0 up. We never let our heads drop though and to the lads credit they kept playing the same way. Passing the ball and looking to use the pace of our wide men. Dan H on the right and Luca on the left. With Louis and Max P hassling in the middle and showing composure in possession this is a formation that, today, really worked for us. The equalising goal came from a through ball into the right of midfield, Dan H chasing and outpacing the GVR defence to lash the ball past the keeper with no chance. 1-1.

We got our tails up then and with Paddy in inspired form looked solid in defence. Willbo and Paddy formed a very solid partnership at centre back and with Sam and HPA showing touch and energy in the full-back positions we were always able to recover even when GVR were able to stretch the play. At one point Paddy was bursting forward from full back and playing the ball through with such poise that Hodgin senior remarked that he was like Baresi - Hodgin junior would later comment that Paddy had played like Thiaggo - i'm not sure if that was Mottha or Silva though.

We lost Freddie very early in the first half with asthma getting the better of him, Dan G was thrust into action in the centre of midfield and he stuck to his task very well. With Jacob ever-perpetual in his motion and Max P playing with great energy we were playing through GVR and only some great last ditch defending keeping us at bay. Using the width of the pitch and the pace of our wide midfielders was working time and again. Louis was linking play very well and using his touch and vision to great effect (that's why he was playing there - this doesn't happen by accident you know!) threading balls to both wings and was unlucky not to score himself with some great shots late on.

William, in goal, kept us in the match to pull off an amazing save, flyinh to his left to keep a goal bound shot out. The GVR fans could be heard cheering they were so sure it was a goal only for it to be pushed wide. This game showed the harshness of being a keeper with Will making a fantsatic save in the first half and many catches and great play only to be caught out late in the second half.

1-1 at half time with the Cougars in the ascendency. The instruction at half time was simple - more of the same. Keep working hard and playing for each other.

The second half kicked off and the Cougars were able to maintain the pressure from the first half keeping the GVR team in their own half and limiting them to chasing long clearances. Paddy was still dominant in the middle of the pitch - his athleticism seemingly knowing no bounds. Our second goal was very similar to our first. A ball threaded through from the midfield saw Luca give chase, out pace two defenders and finish beyond the keeper. 2-1 up and just what we deserved for our play.

Play resumed with the pattern very similar, lots of Cougars pressure without really getting a clean strike on goal. Meanwhile GVR continued to try and catch us on the break.

The equalising goal was a harsh one to concede. A long shot that was on target spinning in the air and as Will leapt to take it it spun off his gloves and into the net. A crazy goal and a real shame for the keeper who, once again, had been out-standing.

This really showed the role of confidence. GVR from being a team defending deep were now flying at us. By contrast the lads heads were not down but there was a tension and nervousness that had not been in evidence before. Defending deeper and with Will being called into action more and more there were longs shots peppering his goal. There was a final piece of action with Willbo showing fantastic tenacity to keep a goal bound effort out at the near post. With the GVR striker bearing down Will, in goal, forced him wide of the goal. Willbo covering in behind got his head on the goal bound effort in a last ditch defensive effort.

The final whistle came with the game 2-2. On reflection a fair result based on chances.

This was an excellent performance - GVR are a decent team and were always threatening. We played football and passed the ball, we kept possession and defended valiantly. When we had to be agricultural we were and when there was an option to pass we took it. HPA excellend again at left back and we now have some serious competion at the back with neither George or Jordan playing today. No-ones position is safe!

In midfield we have one of the out-standing midfielders in this division with Jacob quietly going about his business tackling evrry thing that moves. With Freddie beside him they formed a strong partnership. On the wings we have pace to burn with Dan and Luca being flying machines of the highest order. Add t that the guile and technique that Max and Louis offer and that's a great team.

Paddy was MotM today - we have not seen him in the team for a few weeks and today he strode in like he owned the place and dominated the game from the back. Breaking forward to great effect and playing some lovely through balls. The value of a defender that can bring the ball out is often talked about and he did that today. HPA, again, ran him close today. Considering he was unwell this week he had a stormer today and, as much as he doesn't like to admit it, looks really strong at left back. This could be another player that joined us as a striker only to end up being a defender (Jordan and Freddie falling a similair fate!)

Above all else the that was a team performance today. The lads were shattered at the end - a good afternoon's work and a result that should give us confidence as we look to the new year fixtures.

-----
Thanks to Eric for a very even-handed refereeing performance in the first half.

Cheltenham Youth League - match day 03/12

LRFC Cougars 0 v 6 Hucclecote Youth
2nd December 2012
Naunton Park

Sunday was a tough game, we knew it would be tough and it was. Playing
a 4-4-1-1 formation at the start we switched Louis to the point of
attack dropping Daniel to right midfield with Max P playing just off
him up front. HPA slotted in at left back, SHW at right back and
Willbo and George playing centre backs. The midfield 4 was Freddie and
Jacob I the centre with Daniel and Luca wide midfielders.

The game started even enough with both teams playing some nice
football. On a sticky pitch the touch of Hucclecote was a little more
assured with passes finding their man where we were struggling to get
the run of the ground. Will, in goal, made a couple of early
out-standing saves to keep us in the match. While we had some good
possession and played some good stuff we struggled to get a meaningful
chance or put pressure on their goal.

The first goal, when it came was from a wide left position, with no
real challenge there was a shot that flew in over Wills head leaving
him no chance. The second goal, following shortly after, trickled
inside the post after we failed to clear our lines.

2-0 at half time and while not really in it we weren't really out of it either.

Second half was a different tale, whether it was fatigue or heads
dropping we started to misplace more passes and failed to win the ball
in midfield. As we retreated deeper and deeper more goals were
inevitable. We did threaten late on with Callum going close with a
deft header from a corner and Luca forcing a save from a strong run
and shot. As the ball drifted to the back post we had no-one far
enough forward to get the loose ball.

Hucclecote are a strong team and in the second half they did outplay
us. We should learn from this and more that he opposition it's about
adapting to the conditions, on a heavy, sticky pitch our passing was
not strong enough and the flicks and tricks didn't come off.

George was MoTM for a strong and decisive performance it he heart of
defence. Will ran him close making some out-standing saves as did HPA
who at left back really played well, his energy and pace being well
utilised back there. Louis, starting up front, had a difficult
afternoon not really getting much good ball or the run but kept
plugging away. Ditto Max P who only has one mode and that's full-tilt.

We have another tough game this weekend against GVR where conditions
will be similar. Lets learn from this and get back to competitive
ways.

Availability of our players is where we are struggling at the moment,
so whereas Hucclecote, like Painswick a couple of weeks ago, have 5
substitutes we have 1 or 2. On big heavy pitches that eventually tells
regardless of how fit some of the lads may be.

25/11 - League Match v Gotherington POSTPONED

Time to get the aqualung ready and build an ark.

Sunday 18th November - County Cup Fixture

Unfortunately we have withdrawn from this fixture as with a couple of
players succumbing to illness and injury in the last 24 hours we were
reduced to 9 available players. This is far from ideal as it is a
great day for a football match and it would have been good to lock
swords with a very good Painswick team again. The decision is taken as
with only 9 players there will be tired legs and minds which increases
risk of injury to both sets of players.

Let's get the lads back fit and we'll and continue next week with a
return to league action.

U13's Cup - Painswick V LRFC Cougars

Well done to the lads on Sunday. That was a tough fixture against an excellent opposition. On a huge pitch with only 11 players available due to some technical issues they performed manfully. The effort was visible for all to see when after the game they all just slumped on the pitch. But they should, genuinely,, not be downhearted about the performance for while th result is, obviously, disappointing the performance was anything but.

We lost Willbo for a while due to a pulled stomach muscle, we dropped Luca into left back and while Willbo recovered which he thankfully did played with 10-men. Painswick by contrast had a squad of 15 available. As the game continued Luca then pulled up with his back getting the better of him but continued to play. So to only lose 3-2 in those circumstances is something to take heart from.

Will.I.Am in goal had a stormer, he was calmness personified making catches from long shots and a stunning save palming the ball away from a brilliantly struck corner. In front of him George used all his tenacity and athleticism to snuff as many attacks as possible with Freddie putting in a very solid shift alongside him in the centre of defence. Using his head and left foot (see all that practice pays off) to make some timley clearances. When we got the ball forward we struggled to support the front players. Sam playing at right back had a solid match in an unfamiliar position. Always dangerous playing crosses from deep he wasn't really able to support the attack as he would normally like such was Painswick pressure.

The first goal came against the run of play but after some nice passing in midfield with Jacob, Harvey, Max, Louis and Daniel all being involved in the build up. The ball was played out to Luca on the right wing, pulling the ball back from the byline he hit a cross-shot the flew over the keepers head into the far corner. 1-0 and in all honestly against the run of play.

Painswick pulled one back scoring from close range after sustained pressure.

Before half time we went back into the lead. A lovely free kick from Jacob going in over the keepers head. 2-1.

The message at half time was to get tighter in midfield. A tactical change saw Daniel drop deeper and Max push up front with Luca and Louis swapping wings. With the Painswick right winger being particularly fast we needed some additional cover on that wing. Painswick equalised early in the half and as the game progressed looked more likely to score. While we were still creating chances on the break we weren't getting that final lucky break or bounce to see us clean through. With around 5 minutes to go Max got through and rolled a shot beyond the keeper that drifted just wide of the far post. Despite a performance packed with commitment it wasn't to be our day.

We have an opportunity to put things right next weekend when we play Painswick again in the County Cup.

Note - i am not sure what has happened with google maps but the address and post code of the pitch was correct but the map pointed to Bisley. I will check links before posting them in foture.

04/11 - 11/11 and into December....

04/11 Fixture
It was disappointing to have today's game postponed but after giving the game every opportunity to go ahead there was no option but to do so for the boys safety.

07/11 Training
Unfortunately due to pesky work commitments there will be no training this Wednesday due to availability.

11/11 Fixture
Next Sunday we have Painswick in the League Cup in what will be a tough fixture (looking at their results so far). I still have some availability gaps so please check that tracker that's on the website and let me know availability. With 5 games (all being equal) between now and the end of the season a complete availability view would be very useful.

Training

Well done to the lads (and spectators) at training today - in horrible conditions an extended game of attack v defence showed the value of both keeping the right shape and defending from the front. This is something we need to start doing much more in matches and is something that we will continue to work on in training.

See you on Wednesday!

Clocks Change Tonight

Make sure you remember to change your clocks tonight, they go back an

Energy drinks 'not good for children'

The following article is taken from the website of the Channel 4 programme 'The Food Hospital' it is worth reading and also getting the players to read too. We get taken in by marketing and being told we 'need' something, in this case energy drinks, when the reality is that we really don't.

http://foodhospital.channel4.com/The-Truth-About/in-the-news/energy-drinks-and-children-2011-05-31/

Energy drinks 'not good for children'

"Children should avoid energy drinks due to 'toxic' levels of caffeine," reported the Daily Mail. The news is based on a clinical report of the ingredients of sports and energy drinks and a review of previous research into their effects on children. The researchers combined these findings with expert opinion to make recommendations about the suitability of these drinks for children and teenagers.

The researchers convincingly argued that sports drinks are unnecessary for children and adolescents doing average amounts of physical activity, and that energy drinks are also unsuitable for them because of their high caffeine content.

This was a US study, but many of the results are probably applicable to the UK. The researchers concluded that sports drinks are no more beneficial than water after normal exercise for children. They also say that both energy and sports drinks have high levels of sugar, increasing the risk of obesity, and that their acidity can damage teeth enamel. They stated that the very high caffeine content of energy drinks (sometimes equivalent to 14 cans of common caffeinated soft drinks) makes them unsuitable for children.

The Food Standards Agency recommends that children should only "consume in moderation drinks with high levels of caffeine"

Where did the story come from?

The study was carried out by researchers from the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition (CON) and Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness (COSMF). Sources of funding were not given. The study was published in the peer-reviewed journalPediatrics.

The research was generally covered well by the Daily Mail and The Independent.

What kind of research was this?

This review examined the ingredients of sports and energy drinks, and the similarities and differences between the products. The researchers then carried out a systematic reviewof the evidence of the effects of these drinks on children and adolescents.

The researchers said that sports and energy drinks are a large and growing beverage industry, and sports drinks are marketed to children and adolescents for "optimisation of performance and replacement of fluid and electrolytes lost during exercise". Energy drinks, meanwhile, are marketed as being able to boost energy, decrease fatigue and enhance concentration. The researchers say that sports drinks and energy drinks are two different products, but the two may be confused with each other. For example, "energy" can be thought to imply calories only (which sports drinks also contain), but energy drinks also contain stimulants such as caffeine or guarana, a South American plant extract also containing caffeine.

What did the research involve?

The researchers defined and categorised popular sports and energy drinks and reviewed their ingredients.

The sports drinks that were assessed were All Sport Body Quencher, All Sport Naturally Zero, Gatorade, Gatorade Propel, Gatorade Endurance, Gatorade G2, Powerade Zero, Powerade, Powerade Ion4 and Accelerade.

The energy drinks assessed were Java Monster, Java Monster Lo-Ball, Monster Energy, Monster Low Carb, Red Bull, Red Bull Sugar Free, Power Trip Original Blue, Power Trip "0", Power Trip the Extreme, Rockstar Original, Rockstar Sugar Free and Full Throttle.

The researchers conducted a systematic review of the evidence relating to the effect of the ingredients of these drinks on children's health. They then discussed the evidence for and against the use of sports and energy drinks in children and adolescents. The researchers aimed to produce guidelines for parents, government policy makers, schools and youth sports clubs on the appropriate use of sports drinks for children doing average amounts of activities. Where there was a lack of evidence, the authors instead considered the expert opinions of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition (CON) and Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness (COSMF).

The researchers highlighted that their report was not intended to be a guide for the effectiveness of sports drinks in children and adolescents involved in competitive endurance, repeated-bout sports such as tournaments, or other prolonged vigorous physical activities.

What were the basic results?

Water 'best for hydration'

The researchers first looked at the effect of the drinks on hydration. They said that dehydration can be associated with premature fatigue, impaired sports performance, cognitive changes, possible abnormalities in the body's salt balance (electrolytes), and an increased risk of heat illness. However, they say that water is generally the best first choice for hydration before, during and after most exercise, rather than sports or energy drinks.

High-carb content 'raises obesity risk'

The researchers then looked at the carbohydrate content of sports drinks, such as sugar. With the exception of the sugar-free sports drinks, the drinks contained 2–19g ofcarbohydrate (glucose and fructose) per 240ml serving. This corresponds to 10–70 calories per drink. The researchers said that although carbohydrates are the most important source of energy for an active child or adolescent, in general there is little need for children to drink carbohydrate-rich drinks other than the recommended daily intake of fruit juice and low-fat milk.

Energy drinks (those with added caffeine) generally had more carbohydrates than sports drinks: 0–67g per serving with a calorie content of 10–270 calories. The researchers said that routinely drinking these sports and energy drinks (and soft drinks) will result in excessive calorie intake and substantially increase the risk of becoming overweight orobese.

'Risks of high caffeine'

The researchers said that caffeine has been found to enhance physical performance in adults by increasing aerobic endurance and strength, improving reaction time and delaying fatigue. The size of the effects can vary, however, and there have been no studies in children. Caffeine can have a wide range of effects on the body, including increasing the heart rate and blood pressure. It also reportedly increases speech rate, attentiveness and motor activity as well as body temperature and the secretion of gastric juices. Caffeine is also a diuretic. Psychological effects include effects on mood, increasing anxiety in people who are prone to this and sleep disturbances in some people.

The researchers say that energy drinks can contain large amounts of caffeine, often more per serving than cola. It can be hard to determine the amount of caffeine in the drink from the packaging as the serving size may be different from the packaging size. They say that the total amount of caffeine in some cans or bottles of energy drinks can exceed 500mg, which they say is equivalent to 14 cans of common caffeinated soft drinks. To put this in context, they say that a lethal dose of caffeine is considered to be 200–400mg per kg of weight (about 6g for a 30kg child).

They say that caffeine has other dangers for children, and can affect the developing brain and heart and the risk of developing addiction. They recommend that children should be discouraged from consuming caffeine. They also highlight that the most common way children would be exposed to caffeine is in soft drinks, which have around 24mg of caffeine per serving.

Guarana 'adds even more caffeine'

Energy drinks often include the plant extract guarana. This extract contains caffeine, and 1g of guarana is equivalent to 40mg of caffeine. Therefore, guarana will increase the total caffeine content in the beverage. In the energy drinks that the researchers sampled, they found that the drinks contained up to 30mg of guarana per 240ml.

Electrolyte needs 'met by the diet'

Sports and energy drinks may contain electrolytes (sodium and potassium salts). The sodium content of the drinks was 25–200mg and the potassium content was 30–90mg per serving (240ml). However, the researchers say that most children and adolescents get enough electrolytes from a healthy, balanced diet and that sports drinks offer "little to no advantage over plain water".

Added protein and vitamins 'not needed'

Proteins are often added to sports drinks based on the idea that protein can enhance muscle recovery when consumed soon after exercise. However, the researchers say that most children can easily get their recommended intake (1.2–2.0g of protein per kg of body weight a day) from a well-balanced diet, which is sufficient even for those who are regularly sporty. Likewise, vitamins that are sometimes added to sports drink can be obtained in the required amounts from a balanced diet without the need for supplements.

High acidity 'erodes teeth'

The researchers say that there is some concern that these sports and energy drinks will cause tooth decay in children and adolescents. They say that most of these drinks are acidic and can contain citric acid, which is highly erosive to the teeth. They report a study that found that 57% of 11- to 14-year-olds had erosion to the enamel of their teeth.

How did the researchers interpret the results?

The researchers said, "for the average child engaged in routine physical activity, the use of sports drinks in place of water in the sports field or school lunchroom is generally unnecessary. Stimulant-containing energy drinks have no place in the diets of children or adolescents."

Conclusion

This review delivers a well-argued and convincing case that energy and sports drinks are unnecessary and possibly unsuitable for children and adolescents doing average amounts of physical activity. The researchers say that, in the US, there is a drive to stop schools selling high-calorie fizzy drinks, but that sports drinks have been marketed as a "healthier alternative".

The researchers make a series of recommendations for parents, schools and policy makers. Though these recommendations are intended for the US, some translate to the UK. These include educating parents, children and paediatricians about the risks of these drinks, including the risks of caffeine, obesity and tooth erosion. They suggest that water should be promoted as the best source of hydration for children and adolescents.

A similar review, published by a group of American researchers in February 2011, looked at research on energy drinks and their consumption by children and adolescents. This research, examined by Behind the Headlines, described in further detail the potential dangers of energy drinks for younger people.

The Food Standards Agency recommends that "children, or other people sensitive to caffeine, should only consume in moderation drinks with high levels of caffeine."

Friendly - 21/10?

We have an opportunity to play a friendly this Sunday afternoon
(21/10) against Churchdown U12's.

They are a strong side that won the cup last season and may even have
won the league too. They now play in Gloucester league.

This would be a good run out in a period where we have no games for a
couple of weeks.

Let me know.

Half Term - Training Cancelled

The training session planned for 24/10 has been cancelled as it is half-term.

U13's Cup - FC Lakeside Blues V LRFC Cougars

Our first round match of the U13's Cup was a repeat of the U11 Arthur Stilley Memorial Cup Final against FC Lakeside Blues which we won 3-1.

Since that match we have had contrasting fortunes with Lakeside being relegated to division 2 at the end of last season. On a glorious afternoon with the sun shining and no rain the teams took to the pitch. Our matches with Lakeside have generally been physical (but fair) encounters with Lakeside very strong in the air and with 50-50's. The instructions at the start of the match were to match them in this and to then start to play our passing game. A familiar starting line-up of Will Fenley, resplendent in gold, in goal with a back four of Paddy Christopher, Freddie Palmer, George Garrad and Will Davis. A holding pair of Jacob Burgess and Harvey Parker-Allen. Then an attacking four of Louis Casey on the left wing, Sam Hansson-Willey as the playmaker behind Daniel Hodgin and Luca Bosano playing the right wing.

The pitch has quite a slope (is there a youth pitch that doesn't) and we played the first half up the hill. Lakeside were putting in long direct balls that were forcing us back. We started to win the ball and get it down. Sam Hansson-Willey was involved a lot early in the game, linking well with Jacob Burgess and Harvey Parker-Allen. At the back Freddie Palmer and George Garrad were seeing plenty of action and working well together. Winning the ball and then using the wide defenders, Paddy Christopher and Will Davis to keep possession and start moving forward.

Despite having better quality possession we were unable to make it count being caught offside a couple of times when breaking through and lacking a clinical touch in the Lakeside area. There was also some stoic defending from one of the Lakeside players at the back who caught the eye.

When the opening goal eventually came it was a player opening his account. Max Pemberton had been introduced as a late substitute. Playing in the withdrawn role behind Daniel Hodgin he finished well following persistent wing play from the right wing by Luca to play him through. A decisive strike beat the keeper and opened Max' account for the Cougars. Just reward for some excellent performances since joining us.

This was then followed with another goal within a minute or two (buses etc and so on...) by a fine strike from Daniel Hodgin who can't help but score when on the pitch! The half time whistle followed shortly after.

There were changes made at half time, Dan Griffiths replacing Will Davis at left back and Harvey Parker-Allen resuming his position alongside Jacob Burgess as the midfield screen.

The instruction at half time was to continue as we were, with increasing possession and the midfield winning the battle we expected, playing down hill, to have more opportunities on goal. How right we were. We kicked off the second half, after six (maybe seven) passes the ball was slipped into the inside right channel for Luca to chase down. As the keeper came out he lofted the ball over his head and into the net.

A fine team goal well finished. 3-0.

At 3-0 more changes were made with Paddy Christopher and Freddie Palmer making way for Sam Hansson-Willey (coming on at right back) and Will Davis (returning to the centre of defence). In midfield (with one eye on next weeks County Cup game) Luca moved up front with Callum Dagnall coming on into the right of midfield for Daniel Hodgin.

There were more goals to come. Luca completed his brace with another fine finish from the inside right channel, again chipping the onrushing keeper. Max also completed his brace with a neat goal following some great interplay with Louis Casey and the midfield players. 5-0 up.

In the last quarter Lakeside rallied, as you would expect, and with the Cougars being a little out of shape due to the changes made were able to score two goals. It could have been more but William Fenley, in goal, made an out-standing save late, catching the ball high and clinging on to stop it flying in over his head. Paddy Christopher playing right back had a very strong game, particularly in the second half where he had to defend much more. Harvey Parker-Allen played intelligently today covering positions when players either broke forward or were pulled out of position. Jacob Burgess was dominant in midfield, showing tenacity in the tackle and then guile in possession.

The match finished 5-2 to the Cougars. We perhaps could have scored more but this was a match that gave an opportunity to make a lot of changes and ensure that the lads all got some good game time. The versatility we have was apparent with, due to the changes, a couple of the lads playing in a number of different positions.

Up front the technical ability that the boys have is excellent Louis Casey hugged the left touchline, was always available to receive a pass and never gave the ball away. His link play with Max Pemberton (who is a real box of tricks on the ball and perpetual motion) was just superb today. Max was very close today for the MoTM but that went to Luca. For his powerful and typically energetic play on the wing, an assist for the opening goal and two very well executed goals himself.

We are into the quarter finals of the cup where we will face Painswick Youth U13's on 11/11.

League: LRFC Cougars V Churchdown Panthers 30th September 2012

The fixture calendar has been unkind to us this season pitting us against the Churchdown Panthers twice in succession. Last week, in atrocious conditions, we battled to a 4-2 defeat. This week in better conditions we were on the wrong side of a 4-0 defeat. A match that we struggled to get any break in the final third of the pitch.

With the team resplendent in their new kits adorned with the Lexus Cheltenham logo we took to a windy pitch. Will Fenley in goal, the back four of (right to left) Sam Hansson-Willey, Jordan Pemberton (captaining the side), George Garrad in a MoTM performance and Will Davis. Switching to five across midfield we had Jacob Burgess as anchor, Max Pemberton and Freddie Palmer either side of him. Our flying wingers were Louis Casey and Luca Bosano. Up front Dan Hodgin ploughed a lone furrow and didn't really even get any scraps to feed on. On the bench Callum Dagnall and Dan Griffiths.

For the first half we were playing down hill and with the wind at our backs. Despite this advantage we were unable to break through the strong Churchdown midfield and defence. When we did get within sight of goal we were closed down too quickly to get shots away. This was probably a Cougars first as for the whole match i do not recall a single shot.

It became apparent that this game was going to be all about defence. A task that the Cougars stuck to very well for half an hour when deadlock was finally broken and Churchdown went 1-0 up. There was then a lucky escape for the away side when one of the defence put through his own net only to see it ruled out for offside (the Churchdown player not him!). Will Davis showed bravery in defence putting his head in, time and again to try and win long clearances. Jordan Pemberton was having an excellent game at the back and as the game wore on pushed more into midfield to offer some additional tackling tenacity in there. He has, quite possibly had his best two performances for the Cougars in the past two matches. Alongside him George Garrad was immense. One observer of a game described him as swooping in.... so it might look like the attacking team are going to get a shot away when George Garrad swoops in from the side and takes the ball away. George was excellent today covering a huge amount of ground and being as tenacious and strong as we have come to expect. Deserved MoTM although run close by the whole defence and goal keeper today.

The midfield today linked pretty well but struggled to get the ball forward, this was as much to do with the work rate of the Churchdown midfield as much as their defence putting the ball straight back into the middle of the pitch. This was a day where the ball just did not run for the attacking players. Freddie Palmer and Jacob Burgess linked well under pressure. Jacob's work rate, once again, was superb as he tackled everyone and everything and always looked to pass to a team mate. Max Pemberton had a very strong game playing as the deeper striker, with fantastic work rate and great technical ability he was unlucky not to score with an effort that he controlled inside the penalty area but with the ball not dropping fast enough was unable to make a proper connection with the shot. Another excellent match for our newest signing.

The wingers didn't really get on the ball today in areas to do the damage, both Luca Bosano and Louis Casey showed nice touches and link play but were unable to make their skills tell. With 10 minutes of the first half remaining Callum Dagnall came onto the right side of midfield for Luca who had taken a blow to the chest. He saw out the half and then later in the second half came on up front for Dan Hodgin only for Jordan to then pull up injured. Dan H came back on and Callum was pushed up front. Sam Hansson-Willey playing despite not being 100% fit lasted the first half when fatigue over took him. He had a good first half playing an unfamiliar position against tough opponents. For the second half he was replaced by Dan Griffiths. Dan was called into action in spectacular fashion clearing off the line with the ball rolling into goal.

With three goals (one from a well struck free kick) in the second half securing a 4-0 win, and the points, for Churchdown, this was a game that on the face of it is better forgotten. There were some positives though as there always should  be, we did defend well for large parts of the first half and but for this and good handling and distribution from Will Fenley this could have been many more. Despite conceding 4 goals there was little Will Fenley could do and his safe handling and calmness in distribution were very good.

Churchdown are the strongest team we have faced. They will beat teams by a lot more than four goals and we should take heart from the way we defended and did not let our heads drop. Of course there are things we need to do better, attack the ball from corners and set-pieces, move onto the ball and anticipate better. We also need a little more belief in possession. As the game finished the lads looked exhausted, defending for that long is not easy mentally or physically.

A tough day at the office.

League: LRFC Cougars V Churchdown Panthers 23rd September 2012

You don't need to wear a North Face waterproof to watch the Cheltenham Youth League but it would help.

On a rain swept afternoon on Naunton Park the pre-match talk was all about raising our game. The Gotherington match had enabled us to find something out about our players that we didn't know, or certainly hadn't seen. To be combative and strong.

This fixture the message was simple do it again but with an extra 10% as Churchdown, as i say every season, are the strongest team in this division that we have faced.

Lining up a little different to normal in recognition of some of the Gotherington performances we had Will Fenley in goal, the back four right-to-left was Sam Hansson-Willey, Freddie Palmer, George Garrad and Will Davis in left back. Jacob Burgess and Harvey Parker-Allen lined up in front of them as the midfield screen with the the front four of Max Timothy, Louis Casey, Luca Bosano and Dan Hodgin. On the bench Jordan Pemberton, Max Pemberton, Paddy Christopher and Callum Dagnall.

The game kicked off and Churchdown had the majority of possession. With the ball zipping around on the wet turf we were unable to get any passes together and struggled to retain possession. The Churchdown midfield were winning ball and as were forced deeper into our own area were able to progress uncontested. We defended stoutly with the back four holding firm and the midfield assisting to plug gaps. Will Fenley had to make difficult catches as the slippery ball was fired in from distance.

The opening goal went to Churchdown just over half way through the first half, playing the ball in long from the left we failed to clear and the ball was fired into the corner by a Churchdown player. 1-0 down but playing well enough to still be in it.

We lost Harvey Parker-Allen shortly after the first goal to a knee injury. A reshuffle saw Jordan come into centre defence, with Freddie Palmer moving into midfield alongside Jacob. Then we lost our goalkeeper, Will Fenley, to a pulled muscle. This meant some rapid changes, with Jacob taking one for the team and going in goal. Sam Hansson-Willey moved from right back into centre midfield, Paddy Christopher joining the back-four.

Churchdown scored a second goal, the ball flying on over Jacob's head with nothing he could do. 2-0. There was time for us to pull one-back with a fine finish from Dan H. This was followed by a final substitution in the half with Louis Casey, struggling with a knee injury, needing to come off. This saw Max Pemberton thrust into action taking the centre forward role. Luca Bosano switched flanks to left wing and Dan Hodgin moving to right wing.

This was quite a game for Max Pemberton to make his debut in considering that he is playing a year up but he played very well. Hassling the defence when they were in possession and ensuring possession was maintained high up the pitch. First half 2-1 Churchdown.

The instruction for the second half was to get the ball forward with purpose and try to exploit the pace we have against their defence. This almost yielded a goal immediately with the ball played to Max Timothy, again pulling the strings, who laid the ball to Sam. Sam played it into the channel Luca gave chase and his left foot shot flew past the far post. Had that gone in......

The game then ebbed and flowed from end-to-end as players tired and conditions told. Churchdown stil had the better possession although when we broke forward we did look more dangerous. Max Pemberton was getting onto the ball and starting to link well with the other attacking players, with a bit more practice with the team his technical ability will surely shine.

Churchdown scored two further goals to take a 4-1 lead but to the lads credit they continued to press and got a goal back with a finish in the area by Max Timothy from Dan Hodgins corner. 4-2. The gane would finish this way but not before there was another injury.

George playing a barnstorming central defensive role had hurt his leg and was unable to run freely. A final change was made Freddie Palmer dropping into the back 4 alongside Jordan Pemberton and Callum Dagnall coming into central midfield. There were no real further clear cut chances but there was time for another player to get an injury, Paddy Christopher catching and toe-ending the ball away from the Churchdown number 55 who is probably the biggest and certainly one of the fastest players in the division - as they continued full tilt there was an awkward fall. Fortunately he continued and saw the game out.

The game finished 4-2 to Churchdown. It was an excellent game of football played in horrendous conditions and showed the value of having a squad as, for the second week in succession we ended up with only 11 fit players.

Churchdown are a very good team, make no mistake about that, we know a lot about them and they probably have the better record than we do in these head to heads. The gap did not feel that broad today though. Even with the injuries and changes to personnel the boys played, particularly in the second half, some good solid football. Defending first and then trying to show some quality going forward.

The message remains the same control the ball, pass it quickly and support the play. Try to relax in possession and play our game. When we do that we can match anyone even if we don't get the result. Churchdown could not relax in the game today because we kept going.

The man of the match was an odd one today. (Not that he's odd) but it was given to Jacob Burgess as he went into goal after we lost Will Fenley. He was bustling energey in midfield and then in goal made some excellent saves and in a couple of one-on-ones some brave saves. Stood with the lads after the game and discussing the performance it felt almost counter-motivational to have an MotM as they had all played well. They all tried their hardest and they all gave their best for the team. In that regard to single one player felt strange today. This team is growing and we have an opportunity to show how much by lining up against the same Churchdown side next week in the away fixture.

We are showing a more combative spirit and physical confidence. We have quality and now we are working hard to earn the right to show that quality. We have competition for places in nearly all positions now which is new and has to be positive. Freddie Palmer showed some excellent form in the back four and also in midfield alongside both George Garrad and Jordan Pemberton. Sam Hansson Willey started at right back then moved into midfield once we reshuffled. Max Pemberton made his debut against very difficult opponents. Jordan Pemberton showed that, as captain, he can organise a defence even from the touchline.

We need to keep building on that oh and we need to keep the players fit!!

League: LRFC Cougars V Gotherington 16th September 2012

The first game of the season saw us pitted, in a home fixture, against newly promoted Gotherington Juniors. With three players, two of whom are defenders, unavailable due to school rugby our back line was depleted. There was then a further withdrawal with Willbo pulling out with an injured back in the warm-up. So despite a squad of 15 we were down to 12 fit players.

Lining up in a 4-2-3-1 formation Will was in goal and in the absence of Jordan captained the side. The back four was Sam, Freddie (who had a stormer and may have found his best position), George and, in his competitive debut Dan G. In front of the back four were Harvey and Jacob as the holding midfielders. In front of them Louis, Max T and Luca with Dan H as the focal point of attack. Callum on the bench.

We started strongly absorbing early Gotherington pressure and started to get on the ball more. Louis on the left was getting loads of the ball and playing neat passes and long crosses into the box for the strikers to latch onto. In deeper midfield Jacob was his usual self, tackling everything and perpetual motion, alongside him Harvey had his best game and is another player who may have found his best position.

In the first half Harvey won more or less all of the long clearances from the Gotherington keeper heading them straight back where they came from. Once we had won the ball he was neat in possession and rarely gave the ball away. He capped a MoTM performance with a fine headed goal, the ball crashing in off the underside of the crossbar, from a Max T corner.

The front four were marauding up front with Max T, despite being in how own words "a little rusty", pulling the strings and using the pace and trickery of the wingers to feed Dan H up front. Dan H, Max T and Luca each scoring a brace and each could have scored more but for some excellent goal-keeping and last ditch defending (and profligate shooting!).

The point was made afterward the match that 5 of our goals came from the ball starting at the back with our goal-keeper. The ball played to the defence then through midfield to the strikers. That, as with the winning of the ball in the air, was a feature of todays performance. While sterner tests will surely come the way we won, retained possession and then in the final third played one and two touch football was lovely to watch.

Callum, as our only sub, was called into action early replacing Dan H up front and then latterly Dan G at left back. With Willbo unable to recover from his back pull we were as Harry (Redknapp) might say down to the bare bones.

The work we have done in training has produced results immediately. Harvey headed the ball more today than in the whole of last season! The back four were talking, calling for the ball and winning headers. The midfielders and wingers were demanding the ball and then helping each other in possession.

As we proved today the front four we have we will always score goals what we need is the platform to allow them to do that. Today we did that.

There were no poor performances in any part of the field today, the team worked hard and learned lessons from last season. That is why we won today.
