Some season stats so far...

The FA Full Time facility allows tracking of goals, assists, clean sheets as well as card penalties etc and so on..

Goals scored is dominated by Painswick who are in the top 3 slots and a total of 40 goals scored. Luca is in the top 10 in 7th place with 8 goals. Gus is just outside the top 10 on 5 goals in 12th. For assists it is a similar story with Painswick players in the top 3 slots but then Gus in 4th and Luca in 5th. We also have Jacob in 6th and Sam in 9th. Creativity all over the pitch.

We lead the table for penalties scored with 2 and in the season so far there have only been 6 penalties scored in total.

Clean sheets is an interesting picture with only 6 teams still having clean sheets on their record of which we are one.

The stats are available on the FullTime website

League match - Longlevens at HOME

Sunday we are back in league action with a HOME match against Longlevens.

The table is a little skewed at the moment as some teams have played a good number more games than others. What is consistent though is that Longlevens have been struggling for results. They sit at the bottom of the table with 7 defeats in 7 games. Whilst they have had a couple of drubblings their most recent result was a narrow 3-2 defeat by Tuffley.

One thing that is certain is that we should, as we always do, approach this game with respect for the opposition and expecting to play the game as we always do.

The game kicks off at 2pm so please make sure you are at Naunton Park for 1:15 so we can set up properly and prepare.

Squad for the game will be
1. Will (Captain)
2. Ben
3. George
4. Sam
5. Tom
6. Ryan
7. Jacob
8. Fergus
9. Hayden
10. Jorge
11. Seth
12. Luca
13. Alf

Freddie and Lewis remain unavailable for selection with Connor coming back to fitness and hopefully being available early in the new year.

Any problems please contact Marcus.

Makeshift Cougars record emphatic win

An emphatic victory this might have been yet after 5 minutes LRFC found themselves a goal down and thinking that this could be a long afternoon.

The Lydney goal came from a long shot across the keeper. Will at full stretch could only parry the ball. The conditions and slippery ball made catching it impossible. As the ball broke there was a Lydney player to put it away.

This was the only real. Jan s Lydney created. Other shots and attempts were routine for the keeper.

LRFC equalised through Gus. Luca broke down the left, jinked inside challenges and crossed for Gus to finish high into the net from close range. LRFC were now back in the game and had their tails up.

In midfield, Seth and Ryan either side of Gus were working great in the holding role. Their willingness to sit in front of the back 4 and be destructive provided a real attacking platform for the more offensive players. They might go unnoticed in games but are vital to how this team plays.

LRFC had a makeshift line up today with injury and work taking its toll. Jacob spotted in alongside Ben in the heart of the defence, Gus dropped deeper and Jorge cane in up front.

Jacob and Ben are probably the two most technical players on this team and were able to keep the Lydney attacks at bay. Their positional sense and reading of the game seeing them rarely caught out. Alongside them Tom and Sam as full backs both had excellent games and registered goals.

Tom following a very typical run. Typical in that his head was down. As he feinted left and right he found himself in the box and finished under the keeper. Just desserts for a really commanding performance from left full back. Is there a fitter player in this team?

Sams goal should have been one of a brace. His header a yard over the line incorrectly missed by the ref. It had no bearing on the game and his goal cam from a sweet strike off his shin and in at the near post from some distance.

You know you’re playing well when your full backs both score.

Up front LRFC were always a threat. The drive of Alf, the trickery of Luca and desire of Jorge and Hayden providing a solid attack. With Gus pulling the strings from deep and Seth and Ryan also driving forward this was a multiple pronged attack.

Alf scored twice, the first a drive following a quick free kick taken by Gus. His second a far post diving header following a cross by Luca.

Luca would score a goal for his efforts being put through, again, by Gus.

Jorge started the game working through the middle. He came close with a couple of chances but in the goal mouth scrambles somehow Lydney were able to clear. The same was true for Hayden, who came close a couple of times but was blocked at the last.

Gus was MotM for a dominant display in midfield. Scoring once and setting up two. He was full of energy and drive today. There were though excellent performances everywhere and that is what will take this team forward.

GFA County Cup - Home match v Lydney (03/12)

This Sunday we start our GFA County Cup campaign with a match at HOME to Lydney.

This is a team we know very well having played them on a number of occasions when they were part of the Cheltenham Youth League.

The game kicks off at 2pm so lets meet at Naunton Park for 1310/1315hrs.

The squad for this game will be

  1. Will (Captain)
  2. Ben
  3. George
  4. Sam
  5. Tom
  6. Seth
  7. Jacob
  8. Ryan
  9. Luca
  10. Gus
  11. Jorge
  12. Alf
  13. Hayden

Missing are Freddie, who is making excellent recovery from his ACL. Connor on the comeback trail following his own knee-knack and Lewis with a broken leg.

With the squad being depleted it is imperative that you contact me ASAP if you cannot make any matches. I am working on the original assumption that you are available.

See you Sunday at HOME. Not away, HOME. OK?

Cut and Nut

Cheltenham Youth League Cup

Tuffley 4 (2) v (3) 5 LRFC Cougars

LRFC’s first Cup match was away to Tuffley. The platform in Harry Potter is probably easier to find than the ground but Glevum Park looked and played great.

Short of numbers with Seth not available, Hayden’s ankle not being up to it and Lewis inability to tell the time and date LRFC lined up in a slightly changed 4-3-3 formation.

In the early exchanges LRFC were dominant, Jacob controlling the tempo and linking well with team mates. With Alf and Luca wide and Jorge working hard through the middle there willing runners to be picked out. In defensive positions the back 4 of Ben, George, Sam, Tom and Will in goal were holding firm. Ryan was playing with intelligence covering George when he broke from deep.

Despite dominating possession Tuffley were first to register a shot and though it was pulled wide it was a warning. This led to the opening goal with Tuffley finishing from close range at the post following a mix up in defence.

The scores were levelled with a fantastic strike from Luca. Picking up the ball wide left he cut inside and sent a right-footed shot into the far top corner leaving the keeper with no chance. 1-1.

Tuffley would score again making it 2-1 in what was the last time they would be in the lead in this match. LRFC scores again to level with Alf sending an excellent header past the keeper from Gus’ header. Gus then put LRFC ahead with a lovely strike from a free kick, over the wall and beyond the keeper. 3-2 and how it was going to half time.

Second half and Tuffley had some fresh legs on the pitch. Lewis had also turned up for LRFC giving them an option off the bench.

Inexplicably LRFC started the second half lacking the intensity that saw them take the lead and conceded a goal very quickly following good work from Tuffley.

Luca then scored his second. Jorge pressed the defence winning the ball close to the byline his cross evaded everyone with Luca on hand at the back post to put it in from a foot out. 4-3.

Tuffley scored again to make it 4-4. The game was now a struggle for both side as fatigue set in. There was an unfortunate incident that saw Tom have to come off with a nasty injury. Losing his balance he slid into a challenge that saw players collide and Tom take the full force in an area that is really not designed for that impact. That saw his game end and him pick up a booking too!

A change was made, Sam coming on in his place. With less than 10’minutes to go the decisive blow was struck. Luca receiving the ball wide left drove towards the box and smashed a shot into the top right corner. The ball leaving his boot rising all the way.

It was a bit all hands to defend following this as Tuffley pressed for another equaliser. It wasn’t to be and LRFC are through to the next round of the league cup.

So many great performances today, Fergus and Jacob controlled midfield. George driving from deep, Ben making tackles he really has no right to. Alf a powerhouse on the right, Ryan quietly effective covering holes all over the pitch. Tom and Sam playing like Tripper and Rose. Up front Jorge showed he now gets what we want by working hard and putting his aggression into the game. Will in goal may have conceded 4 but kept LRFC in contention particularly late on. Luca showing the form of two seasons ago when he was destroying full backs and smashing home goals was the deserved MotM.

2017 - Remaining matches

We have two remaining fixtures in 2017.

03/12 - we are home in the GFA County Cup to Lydney.

10/12 - we are home to Longlevens in the league.

That’s it until 07/01.

LRFC score a handful...

When all around you...

This was a top of the table clash. LRFC in second and Tuffley a point behind in 3rd. A tense match was anticipated and while LRFC started strongly at 0-0 Tuffley were very much in it. Both teams were giving it everything and the game fizzed from end to end. LRFC making consistent progress down the right through the lung bursting runs of Alf.

LRFC made the breakthrough, a cross from the right following a foul was delivered beautifully by Sam. At the back post there was Tom to nod in. 1-0.

It would stay 1-0 until half time.

The second half started and LRFC doubled their lead with a stunning strike from Luca. Out running the defence he saw the keeper of his line and hit a strong shot in at the near post. 2-0.

LRFC were really starting to dominate possession with Tuffley looking a threat on the break. They were restricted to long range efforts which LRFC smothered and blocked. The defenders really did put everything on the line today.

2-0 became 3-0 with a lovely finish from Gus. Jacob found himself in the wide right position and out of nothing created space to find Gus. His shot into the far side of the net beyond the keeper was a fitting finish to a fine move.

Jacob was MotM for the second week in a row. His controlling and reading of the game are quite excellent and he is at the heart of much that is good about this team. In this form he makes the game look easy.

Gus would have his afternoon cut short following a very heavy challenge from behind. Going right through his Achilles this saw him limp out. The resultant penalty was smashed in by Luca straight down the middle. Hayden returned to the fray up front. Playing up front in this team can be a thankless task as the ball is generally played wide with the wingers driving forward. Nonetheless Hayden stuck to the task and worked across the line and dropped deeper to pick up the ball and keep pressure on the ball.

The 5th goal came from Jorge. Playing wide left he found himself on the byline. Driving through a couple of challenges he smashed the ball in from an acute angle. This is what everyone should be talking about but sadly his loss of temper with a few minutes remaining are what remain in the memory.

While scoring goals might grab headlines the work at the back by the defensive trio and Will in goal was excellent. Sam slotted in alongside Lewis and Ben in place of George. This was a seamless transition. Lewis provided the strength, Sam the guile and ability to play out and Ben the technical nous to nip in front of defenders and get a toe in where he really has no right. Maybe they should fight crime?

With Tom patrolling the left and Seth the right this was a strong unit. Ryan and Jacob provide them with tenacious protection.

This is what is different this season. The issues of the past around fitness appear to have gone. The desire is there. The determination is matched by quality. There’s a good squad too. With two players coming off with injury this side can cope. No one likes to start on the bench but when called upon no one lets themselves down either.

As a final comment on the match from Rudyard Kipling...

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
    If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

It is Fintan next in what is now a top of the table clash. Playing this way LRFC have to be confident going into that game.

Tuffley at Home (08/10)

Sunday we have a home match against Tuffley. This is a team we know well having played them last season and also in friendly matches. These are normally close matches with the odd goal being the difference. A look at the league table confirms this with Tuffley in 4th on 6 points from 3 matches. Their only defeat being to Painswick 2-1.

To remain competitive in the league this is a game both sides will want to win.

The game is at Naunton Park and kicks off at 2pm. As usual let’s meet at 1:15 to set up the pitch and prepare for the game.

Squad for this match will be

  1. Will (Captain)
  2. George
  3. Lewis
  4. Ben
  5. Ryan
  6. Jacob
  7. Tom
  8. Sam
  9. Luca
  10. Alf
  11. Fergus
  12. Hayden
  13. Jorge
  14. Seth
Freddie and Connor are both out with knee-knacks.

You thought last week was a difficult match this game will take it up another level.

Be at your best.

Score draw - Rodborough at home

Score draw - Rodborough at home

Leckhampton learned the lessons of the last match between these two sides and started with the right level of tempo.

Playing 4-3-3 they lined up with Will in goal, a back 3 of Lewis, Ben and George. The midfield quartet were Sam, Tom, Jacob and Seth. The attacking trio were Luca and Alf in wide positions with Gus through the middle.

On the bench, Hayden and Jorge.

Playing up the slope in the first half LRFC were more than a match in midfield and while susceptible to a long ball the defence and Tom, forced deeper by the Rodborough right back, were able to clear the lines.

The LRFC back three were immense in this game. Winning the ball and then driving into midfield. As the game progressed and Rodborough were being forced back the back three were in the Rodborough half as they pressed for a winner.

Rodborough opened the scoring with a finish inside the box after LRFC failed to clear their lines. Rodborough were sharper to the ball in attacking positions something that LRFC struggled to get to grips with.

There was time for a disallowed goal, the linesman flagging for offside.

It was 1-0 at half time.

Second half and lrfc playing down the slope started pressing immediately. Rodborough were holding firm and hitting long balls out of defence. On the break they remained dangerous although the lrfc keeper didn’t have any real saves to make.

Lrfc equalised from the penalty spot. Jacob, who was the MotM, threaded the ball forward for Luca to latch onto. His pace sent him clear only for the defender to bring him down.

Penalty given and scored low to the keepers right. The keeper went the right way but couldn’t get down quickly enough. 1-1 and how the game would finish.

LRFC continued to create chances, Gus crossed the ball from wide right which Jorge narrowly missed only seconds into his season debut. Alf and Luca both had chances that they couldn’t fully connect with.

As the end of the match approached it looked like LRFC might get the winning goal. As they pressed though there was an ever present threat from Rodborough that they had to be mindful of. Pressing high did cut off that ready supply.

At the final whistle both teams might feel they had done enough to win it rather than share the points. This was a really competitive and fair contest between two fully committed and capable teams.

Jacob was MotM, his composure in midfield was the calming influence that the team needed. This gave the platform for the team to press and look for goals.

Even more impressive was the LRFC performance. There was desire from every player, energy and tempo. The passing was better; crisper and accurate. There was pressing all over the pitch and fitness levels looked good.

Tom caught the eye in the first half with his energy, fitness and relentless tracking up and down the pitch. The back 3 played as a real unit and Lewis’ in particular is a real physical presence. His was a massively improving performance today as he grows in confidence following his return to the beautiful game following a year egg chasing.

This is something for LRFC to build on and if they do so they will have something to play for until late in the season.

Rodborough at Home (01/10)

Sunday see's a repeat of our last fixture and the return against Rodborough. The game kicks off at 2pm and will be played at Naunton Park. Lets meet for 1:15 so we can set up the pitch and prepare for the game.

We should be mindful of this match and give Rodborough the respect they deserve. They can rightly feel aggrieved following our win 2 weeks ago and will surely be out to set the record straight. If you need a clue as to their form they beat Gotherington last week 7-0.

Squad for the game will be

  1. Will (Captain)
  2. Ben
  3. George
  4. Lewis
  5. Sam
  6. Tom
  7. Jacob
  8. Jorge
  9. Hayden
  10. Gus
  11. Luca
  12. Connor
  13. Seth
  14. Ryan
  15. Alf

Nothing but your best will do.

Victory despite best efforts

Rodborough can feel aggrieved as they tuck into their dinner tonight. How they managed to not get at least a draw despite dominating the game is in no short measure down to the game that the LRFC keeper had.

LRFC did score two goals, the opener from Luca racing on to a through ball. The second from Gus who was strong enough to hold off the defender and then clever enough to scoop the ball over the onrushing keeper.

It was 2-0 going into half time. The second half was made immediately harder when LRFC contrived to gift a goal. The goal was played backward all the way to the centre backs who weren't expecting it and were unable to clear the lines. The ball was played back to the keeper with Rodborough closing down fast. A ricochet later and it was 2-1.

Embarrassed faces all round.

This is how the game would end  but not for lack of effort and application from Rodborough.

It was, at times, Rodborough versus the LRFC keeper with the keeper coming out on top. There was a third goal for LRFC ruled out for offside. Hayden reacted first to a long punt that evaded everyone and clipped a smart finish with the outside of his right boot only for the flag to be raised.

LRFC cannot continue to play this way and get results. The answer is simple, playing the ball quickly to a team mate and moving to anticipate a return ball. Playing the ball quickly while there's time and not when under pressure. Keeping it simple. Keeping the shape of the team.

The LRFC keeper, Will, was the motm for a superb display. Blockbuster saves and dominating his penalty area he kept the team in the game.

There was a highly notable performance from Sam playing wide right. His driving forward and crossing was superb today. So often in the right place. Seth also caught the eye particularly when moving into the holding positions.

With another game away at Cleeve next week at least there's time to get it right.

Rodborough away

No sooner have we kicked off than we have another game.

Sunday 17/09 we are away at Rodborough Hawkes with the game to be played at Archway School, Paganhill, Stroud, GL5-4AX.

According to Google maps it's around 13 miles and half an hour from Cheltenham.

Rodborough kicked off last Sunday losing 5-2 to Charlton Rovers. Despite going down to a heavy scoreline they scored twice so we will most definitely need to be at our best.

Squad for this game will be

  1. Will (Captain)
  2. Lewis
  3. George
  4. Tom
  5. Sam
  6. Ben
  7. Jacob
  8. Ryan
  9. Connor
  10. Seth
  11. Luca
  12. Hayden
  13. Alf
Freddie continues his recuperation from ACL surgery, Fergus faces a late fitness test for an ankle injury and Jorge either has concussion or a back injury.

Almost the same as always

LRFC 3 v 2 Gotherington

Naunton Park

Gary Lineker once said of playing Germany that "two teams kick a ball for 90 minutes then the Germans win on penalties". Our games against Gotherington tend to have a familiar path too. We take the lead, go two goals up then Gotherington come back and we draw 2-2.

Today was almost like that. It was an own goal away from that exact scenario. Same as last season. At 2-2 with 6 minutes to go you could have been forgiven for leaving the stadium(!). You would have missed a lovely free kick from Sam that the defender, under pressure from Alf, headed into his own net.

Yet, as it always does it started so different. The early exchanges were dominated by LRFC. Pressure high up the pitch. The wide players hugging the touch line and the outlet every time even if they couldn't be found.

A new back 3 looked comfortable.

Gotherington play one way and keep playing that way. They do not let up. They keep plugging away and they get back into games.

Tom opened the scoring, rounding the keeper he slotted in coolly from a tight angle. A nice opening goal after maybe 6 or 7 minutes. The lead was doubled with Sam heading Luca's corner kick beyond the keepers dive.

Rather than push on LRFC started to show some nerves in possession. There were two debutants in Connor and Seth and a returning player after a year playing rugby in Lewis. Add to that a new formation and maybe it was harder once players stop playing instinctively and start to think.

Gotherington, as the half wore on pushed LRFC back towards their own goal and scored an improbable goal. A free kick from deep that Will looked to have caught on the wind and eluded him. In conditions such as this just one of those things. The equalising goal came in the second half from fine individual work by the Gotherington striker.

Just before the equaliser LRFC had a goal ruled out for offside despite the ball coming back off the crossbar from where the keeper had pushed it. This denied Connor opening his account but his chance will come.

Connor and Seth Beth impressed on their debuts playing the wide midfield role. It takes energy and reading of the game to play there and they both will take a lot from this match.

To start with a win is all you can ask. LRFC played well in patches and showed great character and desire to come back after being brought back to a drawing position. As fitness and understanding of the pattern of play develops there will. W more to come from this team.

A solid start and flashes of plenty to come.

Pre-Season

If the season started in 2 weeks how would you do?

In the end of season review questionnaire only three players thought they had been fit enough through the season. Two of them were right and one of them doesn't play for us any more. There was at your own admission work to be done.

There was also a feeling that this team can do something next season. That it is good enough. The first objective of the team is that it is enjoyable and fun and that it's a team where you play with your mates. Beyond that it is in your hands. Last season we scored 34 goals in all competitions. The season before 100. However you convince yourselves that you played well last season too often you didn't.

The solution is so easy though. It's about your fitness. You have technical ability, you understand the game but you cannot get there late in games, you cannot keep the tempo going long enough to get what you deserve. Something as simple as fitness is letting your technical abilities down.

This season we have new players and across all positions competition for places. If you cannot do it in games then do not worry as there will be another player in the squad who can. He'll be in your position. Except it's not your position anymore. You now have to fight to get it back.

We have an excellent squad be the best you can be and the team will take care of itself. This is the final season in the Cheltenham Youth League, don't go out with a whimper.

Training starts on Wednesday 05/07 at Leckhampton School from 1830-2000hrs where we will be training with the the reserves and veterans. We will do our own thing and then probably join up with them at the end. This will be posted weekly on Facebook for you to respond with your attendance so we know who's coming and that the session is worthwhile.

We will also do a Monday evening session with details to follow.

Lewis returns

LRFC Cougars are pleased to announce that for the season 2017/18 Lewis Carter is returning.

Lewis comes back to the team following a year of egg chasing. Rugby might be the noble game but football is the beautiful one.

Interviewed just after confirming his return he wasn't heard to say, "I realise now the cougars are everything to me, I just want to play football. It's great because it's a ball and you use your foot." When challenged that surely it's feet Lewis scoffed that he only has one.

Lewis didn't continue "the chance to be coached by Simon again is just too good to pass on. I know he's not on YouTube but I've seen some great cave paintings in hatherley with his best tackles and headers. I need to learn from the Baresi of Hatherley."

It seemed a good time to say goodbye and wish him well. Clearly the sun had got to his head. Or had it?

Drills

The 4-Minute Drill (Aerobic)

WHAT TO DO:

Use cones to measure out a distance of 100m (the approximate length of a full-sized football pitch), with cones placed at regular 10m intervals. Run up and down the full 100m line as hard as you can for four minutes, and measure the total distance you cover. Rest for two minutes then repeat the exercise. Now work out your average distance per set by dividing your combined distance over the two sets in half, and check your times against the chart below.

HOW YOU RATE:

Sunday League footballer = 1000m

Good amateur footballer = 1100m

Championship footballer = 1200m

Premier League footballer = 1300m+

Horrible 100s (Anaerobic immediate / Phosphocreatine)

WHAT TO DO:

Measure out a distance of 100m (the approximate length of a full-sized football pitch) and sprint the distance as fast as you can. Repeat this 6-8 times in a set, with 40 secs rest in between each repetition. Measure your time for each rep, then add the times together and divide by however many reps you completed in order to work out your average time per 100m. If you choose to do a second set, allow 2-3 mins of recovery first.

HOW YOU RATE:

Sunday League footballer = 18 sec/100m

Good amateur footballer = 16 sec/100m

Championship footballer = 14 sec/100m

Premier League footballer = 12 sec/100m

Napalm Shuttle (Anaerobic short-term / Lactate)

WHAT TO DO:

Set up a 25m shuttle-run course with cones every 5m. Perform shuttle runs (run to the first cone and back, then run to the second cone and back etc) for 30 secs and record the total distance covered. Repeat the shuttle run six times with 30 secs recovery in between each set. Divide the total distance covered by the number of sets performed to work out your average distance covered.

HOW YOU RATE:

Sunday League footballer = 90m

Good amateur footballer = 100m

Championship footballer = 110m

Premier League footballer = 125m

Players Player and other questions

The votes for the players player are now all in. Voting was tight with a second round of voting needed to get a clear winner. The announcement will be made at the presentation day on June 17th.

The questionnaire also included other questions relating to the individual  and thoughts on the team...

Luckily, everyone enjoyed playing for the side which is the most important aspect in all of this.

No-one, though, answered yes to having performed their best. Among a couple of specifics like better finishing and more organised set pieces the over whelming reason given was fitness, or rather lack of fitness. This is something that the coaches talked about every week during last season with nothing really changing.

As for what, in our final season in the Cheltenham Youth League, we should be aiming for this was really interesting. Answers ranged from winning the league to winning everything with a couple of mentions to have fun playing.

The two answers are related. for this squad to achieve what it is capable of players need to be fit. Properly fit to play football. You don't get fit playing football you need to be fit to play football. Weight training is great but football is a running sport.

You have identified the problem and have set the target for next season so make it happen by starting now and continuing through the summer so that come the start of the season you are ready for it.

If you want it you will find a way to make it happen if you don't then you will find excuses.

Sucker punch

Charlton Rovers 3 - 2 LRFC U18's

A season finale for LRFC which would have little bearing on their finishing position and even less bearing on the destination of the title.

This was a game played with proper intensity and in fantastic spirit with both teams respecting each other.

The King George V pitch has a slope, it's essentially a hill and LRFC were playing up the hill first half. With CR being strong and composed, particularly in midfield, this was tough work. CR started much the stronger and LRFC could not get a foothold in the game.

But for some excellent defending and alert keeping the game could have run away before LRFC had time to react.

After an initial onslaught LRFC started to find some way back through the pace and trickery of their wingers. This led to no real threat as once in crossing positions there was no-one to cross to as turning defence into meaningful attack eluded them.

CR opened the scoring following a mix up in midfield between two LRFC players that both left the ball for the other. CR sieved on the inertia raced through and scored. 1-0 and no more than CR deserved.

It would remain this way until half time.

Second half and LRFC could be forgiven for thinking they would get back into the game quickly because they were playing downhill. CR maintained their energy levels and their appetite. They took a 2-0 lead with a fine strike from the inside right position.

LRFC then had a couple of moments where last ditch defending clearing efforts off the line were required. The score could easily have been 5.

It's often said that 2-0'is a dangerous scoreline and this proved the case. Almost.

In the final 10'minutes LRFC started to find space. Olly broke free of the marking and offside trap only to see his shot go agonisingly wide. He would rectify this shortly afterwards.

A free kick just outside the box on the left was played to him quickly and while everyone was napping he slotted home. 2-1. The equalising goal came shortly afterwards with Gus, in his second outing this season scoring from close range. Checking the linesman hadn't flagged before celebrating.

Both teams were exhausted now but CR with less than 2 minutes on the clock summoned the energy for one final attack. Scoring with a high shot over the LRFC keeper to make it 3-2 with seconds remaining.

This was tough on the LRFC players who had fought hard to get back into the game but on reflection they can have little complaint as CR probably deserved the win.

LRFC showed real heart and determination to get back into this game and should be proud of the effort and that they never just quit. To a man they were exhausted after the game.

Man of the match was Ben with an excellent defensive display. Technically proficient he didn't put a foot wrong winning the ball cleanly time and again to relieve the pressure. A special mention to Gus who had an excellent match playing a number of positions and running himself into the ground to keep the team ticking over.
