maybe even back in goal for training sessions sooner than you think!

Our next match in the GFA County Cup is on 31st January and will be against a team from Bristol, Bitton AFC.

Bitton play in the Avon League and currently sit top after 10 games with 9 wins and a defeat. Luckily for us the game is at home!

Training 16th December

Please note that there will be no training on Wednesday 16th December.

LRFC Cougars 2015

Recognising the start that we have had to our 2015/16 campaign I thought it would be interesting to look at our performances over calendar year.

We started 2015 on January 4th with an away fixture to Lakeside who we beat 8-1. Jacob scored a hat-trick in that match and was the MotM. We played a further 14 games that season as U15's only losing three against the teams that would ultimately finish above us; Lydney on 51 points and Painswick on 45. The third defeat was against Fintan, a side that we have never managed to beat and who no longer play at this level. We drew one game during that period, a league match against Gotherington 2-2.

We finished third in the league on 42 points. A significant improvement on the previous season where we were bottom of a five team Division 1.

In those 15 matches we scored 41 goals and conceded 22. Jorge was top scorer over that period with 10 goals (he was also our top goal scorer over the season with 22 in total). Jacob was close, over that period, with 8. Luca rounded out the top three with 6 goals. The most notable game during this period was the U15's Cup Final which we won 2-1 against Painswick. Tommy with both goals but a team performance that this side has never put together before.

This all points to an upward trajectory and at the start of the 2015/16 there were changes to personnel. Taylor, Finn, Louis and George all left. In came Olly, Dan and Alf. We started this season at home to Southside. We won that 6-0 with Max as the MotM. We have, so far played 12 matches at U16's winning all of them and scoring 65 goals and conceding just 16. Top scorer during this period is Luca with 21 goals, Dan (A) has 11 and Tommy completes the top 3 on 7. We have though shared goals around with, of the 16 outfield players we have registered, 11 players having scored goals.

In numbers 2015 looks like this....

Played :: 27
Won :: 23*
Lost :: 3
Drawn :: 1

*Inc. the 2015 Cup Semi Final which we won on penalties after a 3-3 draw.

We have scored 106 goals during that period, conceding only 16 and with 8 clean sheets.

Looking ahead we still have everything to play for, League, League Cup and GFA County Cup. The hard work is far from over but if we keep going as we are who knows what could happen....

Muddy Hell

LRFC U16 (3) V (0) Gotherington Youth

This was a war of attrition. The pitch was a sticky, muddy, wet pie; at least it wasn't windy. This game in the past has been one that has tripped this LRFC side up. Rarely have they lost but the most common result is often a draw. Gotherington for all their defensive sturdiness do possess a striker that can score from his own endeavour. The first half saw Gotherington threaten on more than one occasion with Will making a fantastic flying save to keep Gotherington at bay after LRFC had over complicated the game and allowed them through.

For LRFC the outlet was the right where Olly had the legs and room to run forward. Where LRFC struggled was making their territorial advantage pay. This was as much to do with the defence they faced as it was anything else.

It was 0-0 at half time.

Second half could not have been more different, with LRFC playing down the slope they made the extra legs they had on the bench count and dominated the game. Rarely were Gotherington able to clear the ball out of their half. Down the right in particular Olly, Alf, Tom and Sam were all linking well and playing some great passing football made all the more impressive as the pitch was so bad.

The opening goal came from Jorge, scoring in consecutive matches, and finishing a fine move down the right wing. The ball fizzed into the area he made no mistake with his shot. LRFC relaxed after going a goal up and kept applying the pressure even if there was a lack of cutting edge in front of goal. Gotherington continued to defend valiantly but could not prevent the second goal.

LRFC finding space, and firmer ground, out wide where there was some grass on the pitch. Max this time on hand to finish the move with a well struck shot. Sam created the goal, taking responsibility for the loose ball as he ran forward from full back and sending a cross from deeper.

With more changes made to playing personnel the pattern of play was not disrupted. The third and final goal came from Luca scoring from close range in the box and seizing on a defensive mix-up. 3-0 and how the game would end.

This was an excellent result against a side that typically LRFC struggles against. After seeing out the initial energy from Gotherington the game was in LRFC control even if goals were a bit hard to come by.

Tom was MotM for a performance in the heart of midfield that was very typical Tom but with a difference. He was physical, destructive and full of energy. He displays quite remarkable fitness levels and was seemingly not concerned in the least by the heavy pitch. What was different was that he played with his head up and was playing the ball to team mates in better positions. A total defensive midfield display.

He was run very close by Jacob who played in the heart of the defence alongside Ben in the absence of Lewis, missing with a dead leg. Jacob, although in an unfamiliar position was all action and showed the quality he has when bringing the ball out. Alf(ie) was also excellent today; winning balls in the air and showing quality in possession. Improving with every game he is becoming a very important part of this squad.

LRFC finishes the year with a 100% record in league and cup and with 8 more league games to play. If they keep winning it remains in their hands. One thing is for certain, if they take their eye of the ball or drop their performance levels the chasing teams are ready to strike.

Gotherington at Home

Sunday we have our final game of the calendar year with a match at home to Gotherington. They are a team we know well and we have often struggled against. They sit 5th in the table on 15 points from 9 games played with 5 wins and 4 defeats. We will need to be at our best to maintain our excellent start to the season. There also promises to be a bumper crowd for the game with lots of Tommy's boy playing in both sides - lets make sure we put on a good showing!

The game is at Naunton Park and, as the home team, we should meet at 1:15 so we can set-up ahead of the 2pm kick off. The squad will be as follows with Tom unfortunately not selected for this fixture.

League table and results - 6th December...

Hard work at Abbeymead

GFA County Cup Third Round
Abbeymead Rovers (3) v (4) LRFC Cougars

Into the quarters!!

This LRFC team has never progressed beyond one match in this
completion before and yet today after a hard fought game they find
themselves in the quarter finals!

LRFC were away at Abbeymead a team they faced earlier this season
beating 3-1 after huffing and puffing for much of the game. Today's
match had a different feel to it with Abbeymead starting much the
stronger and enjoying the better of the early exchanges. While they
made good progress they were unable to get a telling shot on target
such was the LRFC defence with Lewis and Ben both having excellent
matches.

As the half progressed LRFC started to wake up and turn the game
around. For their dominance they could not get a goal. The opener came
from Abbeymead who breached the LRFC high defensive line to leave
Will, in goal, no chance with a well taken goal.

This sparked LRFC into action and they equalised immediately with Dan
scoring past the keeper who until then had been in fine form. An
excellent save from Luca at the near post particularly catching the
eye.

Half time came with the game poised at 1-1.

At half time the LRFC team were flat; there was very little spark.
Whatever was said seemed to have an impact with the team starting the
second half much stronger. Dominating possession and territory but not
making the breakthrough in terms of goals. With the defence pushing
out LRFC were susceptible on the break with the Abbeymead striker
posing a lurking threat.

Freddie along with Ryan and Alf in the heart of midfield had worked
tirelessly to break up attacks and feed the ball forwards. Ryan would
be awarded the MotM for a display of typical energy and tenacity in
the heart of midfield. The team did play like they were two teams, the
defensive 6 and attacking 4.

The breakthrough goal for LRFC came from Jorge with a fine instinctive
finish. Tommy, in the number 10 role, slotted the ball through for
Jorge to turn and hit home. 2-1 and excellent for Jorge to get on the
scoresheet.

Max started in the number 10 role and was straight into the thick of
the action as Abbeymead defended strongly and looked to close him down
quickly. Max is normally associated with the cultured elements of the
game but today showed a robustness in the challenge.

This LRFC side has excellent options at full back and today had the
full complement of 4 available. With Dan and Adam completely 2-footed
they can play either side and defend adeptly on each wing. Sam and Tom
offer a different approach to the position with a more attacking bias.
What this gives this team is a real blend that can be used for
different phases of the game. Having two talented full backs is a good
position for a team, having four is a bit greedy!

A third goal came shortly afterwards with Tommy bundling home from
close range making it 5 goals in 3 games as his run of personal good
form continues. Abbeymead then scored, possibly, the goal of the game
with the Abbeymead striker chipping the ball with the outside of his
foot beyond Will who was rushing out to narrow the angle.

There was a 4th LRFC goal with Luca finishing after excellent work in
the box. This made the game 4-2 and with moments remaining it was
over. The coaches even shook hands and congratulated each other.
Abbeymead then scored another making it 3-4.

There was though, no time for any other goal threat with the final
whistle being blown shortly after the restart.

The game finished 4-3 to LRFC. This was an excellent game of football
with both teams more than playing their part. From the LRFC view point
they showed physical resilience with Lewis and Freddie in particular
providing steel to the side. When in possession they worked to find
space and support each other. The wingers continue to be the outlet
for this LRFC side and always look dangerous when flying at full backs
towards the goal. Today, but for the keeper, the score could easily
have been more.

There are always things that can be improved and anticipation is one
of them. This was, however, all about getting the victory and getting
to the next round of the competition. The quarter finals will be
played on the weekend of 31-Jan.

Training :: December to January...

I know we haven't even had Christmas yet.......................

but looking ahead to the fixtures over the next few weeks we have a four week gap between our last game this year, Gotherington on 13th December and our first game next year, Lakeside on 10th January.

Looking back at the impact that a 10 day half term had on the team against Bourton this could have a significant impact on our season. With the first game in the new year against a Lakeside team that is doing very well in the league themselves.

We will be looking to organise a friendly, if possible, for the 3rd January - there will also be some fitness training over the Christmas period so that the lads maintain their levels during a period where they will be mainly doing nothing....

Details to follow...

Training Update :: 02-Dec

This Wednesday (02-Dec) representatives from Cheltenham Town FC are coming along to talk to the players about their Futsal education programme. Aimed for boys aged 16-18 starting in September 2016.  They will be at training and spend 5-10 minutes talking through the programme before then leading the training session.

Some background on what the CTFC BTEC is...
The students study a BTEC level 3 sports course with CTFC as well as representing Cheltenham Town Football Club in the national Futsal league. In this league they would be competing against other professional football clubs like Bristol City, Cardiff City & Exeter...

The BTEC course does not affect the students playing weekend football or evenings so they will still be able to play for their respected team they play for, most improve during there time on the course. All education and training takes part in the week during normal school hours.

League Table & Results (22/11)

Perfect 10!

Bishops Cleeve Colts United (1) V (4) LRFC Cougars

LRFC U16's were back in league action today with their 7th game in the competition. Their opponents were Cleeve Colts who they beat 11-2 only two weeks ago in the GFA County Cup. Surely lightning wouldn't strike twice?

It didn't and the way that LRFC set-up they weren't expecting it either.

It was clear from the off that the LRFC game plan was to use the width of the pitch, move the ball wide quickly and support the wingers. The wingers reminded that if they cannot get in on goal to look to play the ball across the goal. To get the cross in where the striker and number 10 would be lurking. The initial exchanges saw LRFC gain territory and progress down the wings with Dan and Luca getting plenty of the early ball. Centrally Tommy and Alf were linking well with Alf very effective in the hole behind the striker.

Alf was substituted after 10 minutes with a dead leg, Max came on and quickly started to determine the tempo of play. Always looking to thread balls through his link up play with Tommy was excellent.

Behind them the defensive unit was in control with Ryan and Jacob snuffing out attacks. The full backs, Sam and Adam were able to push forward to support attacks and the Ben and Lewis partnership, never knowingly undersold, providing excellent final cover. They were called into action quite early on as the Cleeve out ball was very clearly the left winger who had pace to burn; to contain him LRFC needed to double up.

In goal, Will had little to do but needed to maintain his concentration as Cleeve did have attacks and he was called into sporadic action, particularly in the second half where he made an excellent save in a one-on-one and tipped another goal bound shot onto the crossbar.

LRFC made the breakthrough with Tommy scoring from close range following good build up play down the left. LRFC then lost Alf who picked up a dead leg and was replaced by Max. Tommy would double his tally with another goal, this one picking up a long ball from Lewis's clearance he raced into the box and put his shot wide of the keeper.

The third goal would come from Dan who looked dangerous all game and scored from a ball played in from the left.

There was a moment in the first half that was worthy of a goal, LRFC won a throw in deep in their own half. They played the ball back and along the defensive line from the right to the left. Once on the left they pushed forward, Adam to Ryan to Luca and onto Jorge. Jorge threaded a ball through perfectly for Dan to burst through onto from the opposite wing. His shot was well struck and goal bound drawing an excellent save from the keeper.

At half time it was 3-0 to LRFC.

The second half was a very different matter. While the result was rarely in doubt Cleeve did exert more pressure and play some nice football. They were deserving a goal which duly game. Making the result 4-1.

The LRFC third goal? That was scored by Alf who playing on the left wing hit a very deliberate, not flukey whatsoever, shot that went high over the keeper dropping in at the far post.

The MotM was difficult today as the whole team played well, Adam was nominated for his control in defence and energetic support of attacks. Late in the game he had a shot that was arrowing into the top corner only to be denied by a fantastic save. An excellent full-back display.

There was a lot to admire in this LRFC performance, while they never hit the heights of recent matches they played with control. Retained possession and showed quality at the right moments. On another day the score could have been very different, Dan hit the post and side netting, Jorge had chances that he just failed to connect. Ryan, so often defending, found himself in shooting positions a couple of times unable to make that final contact tell.

Importantly this was a milestone for this team. Ten games this season in three competitions and winning them all. In the process this squad has scored 58 goals along the way and conceding only 13. Everything is still in their own hands - they need to keep playing this way and working for each other.

Back in league action - Sunday 22/11

Sunday we are back in league action with a match away to Bishops Cleeve.

They currently sit 11th in the league on 7 points from 7 games played having beaten Saracens and Sling and losing four along the way. We played Cleeve only two weeks ago in the GFA County Cup, winning 11-2. Cleeve will be smarting from that so we should be prepared for a much tougher fixture.

The game kicks off at 2pm so we should meet there for 1:30.

With Ollie still injured the squad will be as follows, noting that this is the maximum squad size of 11 starters plus 5 subs.

The game will be played on pitch #4 Cheltenham Road, Bishops Cleeve, Cheltenham, GL52-8WA.

Into the Semi's...

Southside Star U16 (1) v (5) LRFC Cougars u16's

As a mark of respect for the horrors that occurred in Paris on Friday
night there was an impeccable minutes silence before the game. Whilst
at such moments sport, indeed many things, seem trivial what is
important is that life continues and continues with the same passion
and verve as before....

=================

that said this was an odd match. A game where the result was not
really ever in doubt and as a result failed to pick up any real tempo
and energy, certainly within the LRFC players. Southside were reduced
to 10 men from the start when one of their number turned his ankle in
the warmup yet rarely did it look like they only had 10 players.

LRFC started playing down the slope and the early signs were good. A
goal from Luca within the first couple of minutes seemed an omen of
what might come. Credit is due to Southside that it didn't.

LRFC were enjoying the majority possession yet in the early part of
the game Southside did cause them to scramble back. Their striker
showing enough strength, athleticism and desire throughout the whole
match to be a threat. That he would score in second half was reward
for his endeavour.

A second LRFC goal looked likely when they were awarded a penalty.
Tommy bundled over from behind. Clumsily, not maliciously, left the
ref an easy decision. Luca hit the ball well enough, it was just a
shame that it hit the cross bar and went over. On a day where
conditions were squawkish keeping it down might have worked better.

When the LRFC second goal did come it was from the unlikely position
of right back. Perhaps inspired by Mario Gaspar's goal against England
on Friday night? Sam picked up the ball wide right having pushed on
supporting the winger. His cross flew towards goal and dropped in the
far corner over the keepers head. 2-0.

Tommy would score a third in the half bundling in for close range,
alive or the keepers fumble.

The second half was quite frustrating to watch. With Southside
defending ever deeper LRFC were able to keep the ball but had sterile
possession in the area between penalty box and half way line. There
was no way through. When they did breach the Southside defence the
passing was not good enough to create chances. As the game ticked on
LRFC resorted to playing longer balls that in these conditions saw the
ball skid away.

It was while LRFC pressed the play that Southside scored their goal.
The ball hit long to the striker who controlled under pressure, beat
the last line of LRFC defence and poked the ball past the on rushing
Will in goal. A nice piece of individual play and as already said, a
deserved goal.

There were a couple of fantastic strikes from Alf who smashed the ball
goal wards from outside the box only to see the keeper get a hand to
it. His season opener cannot be far away.

There were two more goals in the second half. Dan with, probably, the
goal of the day. Picking up the ball he cut inside from the left wing,
opened out his body and hit a right footed shot that flew into the top
corner and in off the post. A really clever goal. Tommy would complete
his brace scoring for close range.

The game finished 5-1.

There were some great passages of play where LRFC kept possession and
moved the ball across the midfield and back again waiting for an
option to play it forward rather than just hit and hope. There was,
though, a lot of times where the ball played forward was too long or
too heavy to be able to be controlled. Against an opponent that
defends deep and with motivation the play to breach this needs to be a
bit cuter. If a winger breaks a tackle and has space the ball needs to
be played then, too often the LRFC players went for the Hollywood
ball.

Tommy was the motm for a game where he knitted play together and on a
day when conditions were so bad that his technique and touch were
excellent. Playing up front he scored two goals that were poachers
goals, they came at the right time for this LRFC side.

There is more to come from this LRFC side but as they develop they
keep winning which is a nice habit. They also have a great spirit
throughout the team and it was good that Olly and Dan G, both out
injured, could be seen in the stands supporting their team.

This team keeps on scoring and keeps on winning. Good habits to have.

League Cup V Southside Star 15/11

Sunday we have a League Cup match V Southside with the game to be played at Bournside. Kick off is at 2pm so we should aim to meet there at 1:30.

We played Southside in our opening fixture beating them 6-0. Since then fortune has not been on their side and from 6 games played they have won one (beating Bishops Cleeve 3-0) and lost five. This is a cup game though and in a one-off fixture anything can happen.

We cannot afford complacency.

The squad for the game...

What a performance!

GFA County Cup
LRFC Cougars U16's (11) v (2) Cleeve Colts U16's

There was an immaculately observed minutes silence before the match
today. With three games taking place on Naunton Park it was eerily
quiet with just the wind howling through the trees as players and
supporters showed their respect.

The teams lined up, Cleeve in their change kit of white shirts LRFC in
their traditional green. There has been criticism of LRFC in recent
games for not playing their way. Today they put that right.

There were lots of goals, it was 5-1 at half time with goals from Dan,
Luca, Jacob with two, and Freddie. Each goal was well taken with the
opener from Dan breaking through the Cleeve back four and smashing the
ball over the keeper from just outside the box. Cleeve then equalised
through their winger/striker who showed excellent pace and a keen
finish from a tight angle to level the scores. This was short lived
and within a couple of minutes LRFC were ahead again with a close
range from Luca following some pressure in the Cleeve box.

LRFC restored the lead with Luca finishing from close range. Jacob
then bagged a brace from the right wing position the first smashed
home emphatically.

Freddie scored the pick of the goals, a team move saw play build up
the right. As the ball was played across the edge of the box he
stroked it home side footed. This was Freddie opening his account for
the season and he would go on to complete a hat-trick in the second
half.

Playing in the holding pair alongside Ryan there was an initial period
of intensity as Cleeve started well but once this dropped off he was
given time and space to be more creative in his play. Ryan, whose
tenacity in the tackle knows no bounds, was typically bustling through
the game. Winning the ball back and feeding it wide and looking for
through balls at every opportunity.

Alf too, played in the holding pair and showed a developing
understanding with Sam at right back to link up well and play the ball
into the attacking positions. A player that is improving each game he
plays.

With quality throughout the squad a player that has struggled a little
this season has been Jorge. Today he had his best game for this team
this season. Playing deeper in the number 10 role, this team has so
many number 10 type players, he was able to get onto the ball more and
then use his skill to play the ball either wide, forward or to retain
possession under pressure back or sideways. This was Jorge at his
best, quick feet, playing with his head up and using his skills in a
part of the field where he can be dangerous.

Lewis and Ben are developing a solid partnership in central defence.
Ben rarely puts a foot wrong, rarely takes more than one touch and
rarely makes a wrong decision. Lewis is growing this season into a
full blooded competitor and improving with every game. Now winning
headers and relishing the physicality of the game he is rising to the
challenges and improving with every game.

In the second half there were seven more goals, six for LRFC and
Cleeve scoring one. Freddie would complete his hat trick, a penalty
following a foul on Dan. Then a finish into the top corner from inside
the box.

Dan would score his second late on smashing the ball past the keeper.
Luca, who was also motm would score a second half hat-trick. Once he
realised he had the beating of the full back he tormented him at every
opportunity creating shooting chances or playing the ball to a team
mate.

Tommy started from the bench and when introduced came on the striker
role. Adept at holding up the ball he brought others into play often
selflessly, and was unlucky not to score in the second half when
receiving the ball in the box he shifted the ball and fired it goal
wards only to see his shot come back of the post.

Max, also starting from the bench, came on, initially in the wide
right position but when he was played through the middle started to
have more influence. He released a superb ball when LRFC were counter
attacking creating a goal scoring chance for Luca to finish

Finally LRFC are starting to play like a team at the top of the league
they controlled the game from the start. What must have pleased the
coaches and supporters was that in possession there were options. The
players were composed enough to play it back and across the pitch
rather than trying to turn and take the opposition on.

It was playing this way that led to the goals and the result.
Controlling the game by retaining the ball then using the dynamism in
attacking positions. Lessons learned across the whole squad.

More than just a victory this was the first time that this LRFC side
has won a GFA County Cup game having previously always been beaten in
their first game of this competition.

Special mention for Olly who is missing at the moment through injury
and came to watch and support the team today.

Plank Challenge

Benefits of the plank...

1. A Toned Belly

Planking will help build your deep inner core muscles that lay the groundwork for that six-pack look. As your abdominal muscles become stronger, your mid-section will tighten.

Keep in mind, however, that in order to really get "six-pack" abs, you have to shed fat.

2. Reduce Back Pain

Planks work for back pain because they strengthen your core, which has the pleasant "side effect" of reducing back pain. They also strengthen your back muscles, especially those in your upper back.

"Because the plank exercise requires minimal movement while contracting all layers of the abdominal fascia, it is an excellent way to strengthen the core, which, in turn, helps reduce low-back pain."

3. Flexibility

While building strength, planks also increase flexibility in your posterior muscle groups. The muscles around your shoulders, collarbone, and shoulder blades will expand and stretch (an area that often receives little attention), as will your hamstrings and even the arches of your feet and your toes.

If you do a side plank, you can also stretch out your sides (especially if you extend your arm up over your head in line with your body). To increase the stretching benefits, try a rocking plank – once in basic plank form, rock your body back and forth by moving your toes a few inches either way.3

4. Improve Your Mood

Virtually every exercise has the potential to give you a mood boost, and planks are no exception. Planks are unique, however, in that they help stretch and ultimately relax muscles groups that often become stiff and tense from prolonged sitting. The tension release that planks provide is uplifting for your spirit.

5. Improve Your Balance and Posture

To do a plank correctly, you must engage your abs to stay upright. Side planks or planks with extensions are particularly beneficial for building balance, as are planks performed on a stability ball. To test and strengthen your balance, try a side plank with a leg raise – get into side plank position, then lift your top leg and hold for one count. Lower it and repeat, then switch sides. In addition, planks work all the muscles you need to maintain proper posture, like your back, chest, shoulders, abs, and neck. If you do planks regularly, you'll find you're able to sit or stand up straighter with ease.

Lethargic afternoon.....

Bourton Rovers (3) v (6) Leckhampton Rovers FC

This was a perfect day for football. Unseasonably warm, blue skies and
barely a breeze. The pitch was large and wide and it should have been
a match against a team that was there for the taking. However, there
are no easy games....

Lining up with Will in goal, the back four of Tom, Ben, Lewis and Sam.
In front of them Ryan and Freddie. That attacking quartet was then
Jacob, Tommy and Dan with Jorge up front. On the bench; Luca, Alf and
Adam.

The game started quietly for LRFC who had no energy or zip. There was
no tempo to their play. This continued and as notorious slow starters
the coaches left it as it was, thinking that it would click soon
enough. Even when Bourton opened the scoring having run through the
middle of the pitch unchallenged to finish over Wills head as he
rushed out calm rained. One nil became two nil and still there was
little reaction from this LRFC side.

They did pull a goal back from the boot of Jacob who finished from an
acute angle close in. 2-1. The ball through was from Dan, returning to
the side from injury lay-off, who slid the ball in behind the defence
for Jacob to run on to.

Changes were made to the playing personnel. Lewis making way for Jacob
to drop back into centre back with Luca coming onto the left. The
source of our goals of late has been the wings Jacob scoring in this
game from the left wing and with Olly, Dan and Luca all netting in
previous games.

The change made an impact with Dan and Luca linking well and
tormenting the defence from two prongs. In midfield and defensive
position LRFC continued to look vulnerable with little by way of
cohesion. There was also frustration creeping in as the attacking
players were continually being flagged, correctly, offside.

Alf would come onto the right wing midway through the half with Adam
rotating through the full back positions with Tom and Sam.

Bourton scored their final goal to go 3-1 up. Before the half was out
Dan would score to make it 3-2 going in to half time.

At half time LRFC looked done in. Lacking confidence in each other and
struggling to lift themselves. There was little energy and next to no
enthusiasm. A couple of changes were made, Lewis came back on in
central defence and turned in a massively improved performance. Where
before there was indecision and hesitation he was far more aggressive
towards the ball and more dominant - just what the team needed to
settle down and restore confidence.

The second half performance was dramatically improved. LRFC equalised
through a penalty won by Dan and scored by Luca. Dan tormented the
defence down the right wing, as he jinked, tricked and muscled his way
into the area he was brought down. No dispute. Luca scored the penalty
firing to the keepers right. 3-3.

Tommy would then score from close range following more trickery from
Dan. 3-4. Having taken the lead for the first time in the game LRFC
then started to play better, much better. Dan would net his second of
the game and Luca would go on to score his second. 3-6 and how the
game would finish.

LRFC won a succession of corners and were unlucky not to score with
Alf going close on two occasions. Each time the keeper making an
excellent save.

Jacob was the MotM for a performance that was text book Jacob. He
started on the left wing from where he scored, then dropped back to
centre back, played holding midfield and then moved to the number 10.
He had a 5 minute breather and then resumed picking up where he
started back on the left wing. A excellent energetic performance when
most around him were floundering.

Dan ran him close, scoring twice and winning the penalty. He tormented
the defence particularly in the second half. Lewis was also up there
for turning around his own performance and being a different player
second half.

The result was all important. With the teams in the chasing pack not
dropping points this LRFC side needs to keep the pace.

So what was wrong today?
The simple answer is fitness. This LRFC team has good players,
excellent players. Players that know their roles, players that know
each other. Today they stopped running and stopped working for each
other in too many positions. Too often the ball was played forward for
one of the strikers to try to do something individual. While this can
work it should not be a game plan.

When that doesn't work the ball comes back to quickly and puts
pressure on the defence. When the defence doesn't communicate there
are gaps and this Bourton side was able to capitalise three times.

Too often there were no options for the LRFC player in possession as
the other players were static. Having played a pass or clearance they
stopped moving only reacting when the ball came back towards them.
There was no anticipation. Yet this LRFC passes the ball so well and
has real quality when they do. They did not have the energy to play
this way today.

This side sits at the top of the league with a 100% record - they are
there on merit and should play as such.

With training only once a week, and having missed a couple of sessions
due to half term, the squad needs to take much more responsibility for
their own fitness. On the evidence of today this cannot start soon
enough.

Magnificent Seven

LRFC (7) v (0) Sling Utd Fc

LRFC started their defence of the cup with a home match to Sling UTD
FC. Looking at the league form LRFC could be forgiven that this was
going to be a straight forward game. While the result may show that it
was Sling played with commitment throughout and it took some time for
the game to be over as a contest.

Lining up in a familiar 4-2-3-1 formation the starting 11 was not that
familiar. The back four were Sam, Lewis, Ben and Tom. I front of them
Ryan and Alf. The attacking trio of Jacob, max and Ollie behind the
striker, Luca. Will, captaining the side, was in goal.

The bench was incredibly strong with Freddie, Jorge, Akinfenwa (I mean
Dan G), Adam and Tommy. Let's not forget that this LRFC team is still
without the Akiat who should be back in contention for their next
game. It was good that he came to watch the lads today.

LRFC kicked off playing down the slope. From the off they were clearly
the more dominant side on display. Olly, on the right wing, had the
beating of his full back convincingly and was driving to the byline
and pulling his crosses back across the box. LRFC failed to convert
these and indeed chances from many corners, it was fortunate that this
was not relevant in the grand scheme of things.

The opening goal came from Luca, in a rich vein of form, picking up
the ball in a crowded box he jinked and finished from close range. He
would put the team 2-0 up from the penalty spot gate being fouled
himself. Sending the keeper the wrong way. He would complete his hat
trick in the second half smashing a left footed shot over the keeper
that despite getting a touch on was unable to keep out.

The third goal was an unfortunate own goal. Tommy, picking up the ball
deep saw Jacob on the move on the left wing and sent an arrowed pass
into his path. As the keeper came out the defender got his head on it
and directed the ball into the empty net. It was unfortunate as the
Sling keeper had a good game making some great saves to keep the score
under control.

Second half and LRFC turned up the heat. Fitness and pace told and
despite making a number of substitutions in every position bar keeper
kept the tempo up and in possession always looked a threat. Olly would
score for close range and also hit the bar and cross bar denying him a
hat-trick. Jorge worked tirelessly and is playing the way that he
needs to in this team, a real improving performance.

Alf in centre midfield is coming into form and getting better each
week. Always combative he won all the headers in the middle and showed
excellent composure in possession.

Max smashed one home from inside the box to cap a fine display. He
would score a better second following a lovely passing move involving
Tommy Jorge and Olly that was, inexplicably, ruled out for offside. As
many chances that were missed from corners there were offsides. Some
were debatable and down to the fact this side has so much pace going
forward. Sometimes the ball needs to be played forward even quicker.

Tommy scored from distance and was denied by the woodwork, or is it
metalwork, and also from a remarkable save from the keeper.

This was a much better performance from LRFC. In patches they were
unplayable and with so many solid performances picking an motm was
difficult. Alf was given the award for an improving display and one
that showed a full range of his abilities. His initial rustiness from
a lack of football over the last couple of seasons disappearing to
reveal the footballer within.

There's always room for improvement but with so much rotation and
flexibility in today's squad this was a really solid performance. A
clean sheet is always pleasing and Will only had a couple of saves to
make. He was called more into action from back passes than the
opposition, clearing his lines with both his feet and head.

The back 4 were rotated with Ben and Lewis starting at centre back but
through rotation Freddie, Jacob and Dan G all taking a stint back
there.

This LRFC side is strong when breaking with pace yet has the guile and
vision to be able to play a more measured passing game too. Some of
the passing today was excellent, tom and Sam who were the starting
full backs with so much time to get forward were really influencing
the game from deep.

There will surely be sterner tests but this was a professional performance.

The defence of the cup starts here...

Sunday we are at home to Sling UTD in the first match of our cup defence.

Sling currently sit 15th in the table with 4 defeats in their opening
5 matches, scoring 5 but conceding 20 along the way.

The match will be any Naunton Park with kick off at 2pm. We should
meet at 1:15, as usual, to set up the pitch etc.

We have a full squad for the game...

Will
Lewis
Ben
Sam
Adam
Tom
Dan G
Jacob
Ryan
Freddie
Max
Luca
Ollie
Jorge
Alf
Tommy

Let's make sure that we learned what's the best way for us to play
after last weeks performance and how we played in training this week.
We need to up the tempo and move the ball quickly, when we do that we
are excellent when we don't it all starts to go awry and we give the
ball away cheaply.

Remember that you won this competition last season, let's start this
one with the same intensity.

Longlevens FC (0) v (8) LRFC Cougars

A glorious early autumn Sunday saw the sun shining, barely a breeze and LRFC players, pre match, dropping like flies. With Dan (A) already missing with a knee-knack there was Tommy with an ankle-knack, Dan (G) who was unwell with what can only have been a super bug - no mere cold could stop the strongest of players. Maybe it was kryptonite? The lastly there was Adam who was missing through being grounded. Where Tom leads others follow.

With a squad of 13 and against a team they knew little about having never faced them previously LRFC lined up in typical 4-2-3-1 formation. At the back, Tom, Ben, Lewis and Sam. In front of them Freddie and Ryan. The attacking trio behind the striker, Jorge, of Jacob, Alf and Luca. On the bench Max and Olly.

From the off LRFC were on the ball quickly and forced Longlevens back into their half, deeper and deeper. On a massive pitch there was always going to be space and with Longlevens switching to 3 at the back this meant there quite literally acres for the LRFC wingers to run into.

The out ball for LRFC was on the left. Tom and Luca were linking well, defending the space and driving at the full back at every opportunity. He had a torrid afternoon. With all the early play down the left it was from the right that the opening goal came.

LRFC had the majority possession but were unable to get the final connection to get the goal that their play deserved. Ryan had an early shot that was deflected over, there were then moments of indecision that gave Longlevens time to regroup and get the clearance away. This LRFC team needs to trust its shooting more and even just toe poking the ball goal bound when in the box.

The opening goal came from a corner, Jacob diving spectacularly to send his header beyond the keeper much like this one... http://youtu.be/1Q5-ANGlhuM.

The pattern of play continued with LRFC dominating possession. With the game poised at 1-0 though LRFC could not get the breakthrough. Longlevens continued to press and with a mix-up in the heart of the LRFC defence a Longlevens player broke through. As Will rushed out to narrow the angle the Longlevens striker tried to slot the ball inside the left post. He opened his body well enough but the shot drifted wide of the upright.

A real let off for the LRFC team.

The second goal then came from link up between two wingers. With Ollie now on the wing he drove forward and crossed for Luca to finish from close range. 2-0 and how the game would be at half time.

Second half and for all the quality that was evident through much of the first LRFC started like a team of strangers. There was a complete lack of cohesion and even less communication than normal. LRFC were winning the ball in the middle of the pitch but not moving it quickly enough to the wide players where the game could be stretched. When they did the impact was devastating. Luca scored two more goals quickly the third a shot into the side netting of the far corner. There would be a further goal where following a mix-up between the Longlevens keeper and defender three LRFC players, Luca, tom and Olly, all lined up waiting for it. Rather than cross or pass Luca went past the keeper to net his fourth.

In between Max scored an excellent free kick. Outside the area and to the left of centre. He struck the ball over the wall,it just dropping over the keepers out stretched hand. A lovely free kick.

There were two more goals and the unlikely goal hero was Tom. A player that always gets roasted in the prematch briefing had an excellent game today. Starting at left back he thwarted any attacks down that wing. Then as he was pushed further forward scored two excellent goal. The first a shot from wide left that dropped into the side netting of the far post, the second a fine individual effort.

At the final whistle LRFC had won the match 8-0.

Luca and Tom were the joint motm's such was their influence on the game and the impact of their play. Six goals between them, a constant threat with their energy and directness Longlevens just could not cope with them.

There were other performances of note and Alf caught the eye playing, initially I the number 10 position,  then holding midfield and then latterly and most impressively at right full back. If his dad had been able to return the ball to the field of play it would have been a perfect afternoon for the Little household. Jacob, aside from opening the scoring, played on the left wing, centre midfield and centre back.

This LRFC team is now setting the pace in the division with 5 wins from 5. Goals are flowing from different players and there is unity in the squad. What they need to remember is the way of playing that that has got them this reward. Effort and endeavour are a massive part of this team but when in possession the ball must be moved quickly to the wingers and play switched.

In central positions the play is crowded and keeping the ball is harder. Playing one or two touches to keep the ball moving and then passing to a team mate then moving to be available for the return. This team is built on movement and quick passing. It does not take much to disrupt this pattern of play.

This was an excellent win and a real marker to our challengers at the top of the table.

Of historical significance was a flyover, for the last time, of a Vulcan bomber. Quite a special moment. Live long and prosper.

NO FIXTURE :: 25th October

This is to confirm that there will absolutely be no fixture on 25th October so you can make other plans :)
