Saturday training 10:00 - 11:00 will be a last practice, we will then

U16's - Really??

Thanks to everyone that has replied confirming that they wish to continue with the LRFC Cougars as U16's next season (U16's really?!?!?).

We have enough for a team so I am entering us, those that haven't replied confirming one way or another please do so ASAP so that appropriate plans can be made.

Groundhog Day at Gotherington

A draw away at Gotherington. Sound familiar? This must have been
the fourth or fifth time the Cougars came here hoping for more than a
point, but came away disappointed.

Our last league game had nothing riding on it – but lots for the boys
to prove. With Painswick winning midweek, we knew we would finish
third win, lose or draw. However, with the League Final just one week
away, this was the last chance for players to impress – and also a
last chance to sharpen up both our defending and finishing.

The boys went out with two clear instructions; we needed to defend
better than we had recently to stop shipping sloppy goals; be decisive
and always first to the ball into our half without letting it bounce.
The midfielders had a first task of shielding and supporting the back
two. Secondly, we needed to take our chances. Despite recent
high-scoring games, we know that our conversion rate is still not high
enough. Against the better teams we needed to be more clinical – and
on a tight pitch against opposition who defend well this was a good
test.

This is never an easy place to play– in the regular season,
Gotherington's home record of five wins and a draw (the draw being 3-3
against Painswick) speaks for itself. The Cougars were aware of this
having come away from a cup tie earlier this season with a narrow
victory on penalties following a 0-0 scoreline. The small, narrow
pitch makes it difficult to play our normal passing game. Coupled
with this, Gotherington are a good side – in particular with quality
up front where they are always dangerous, and a very strong back two
pairing containing – apart from George – the fastest centre half in
the league. Breaking them down was always going to be tough.

We started with Will in goal, a back four of Sam, George, Lewis and
Adam, with Ryan and Freddie the midfield holders, Finn and Jacob out
wide, and George up front with Tommy sat in behind him. Max and Louis
provided the attacking options on the bench. The Cougars started
well, getting into a good passing rhythm early, with Ryan and Freddie
strong and decisive in midfield. Both Finn and Jacob were proving
useful outlets wide, and Tommy was linking well to play them in. Sam
was also proving an additional attacking option on the right, linking
well on a number of occasions with Jacob to find space on the right.
One such move put Jacob into space for dangerous cross into the
middle, the ball fell to George who finished clinically. 1-0. Ten
minutes gone, so far, so good.

Up front we were dominating possession but not converting into clear
chances. George was unlucky when put through on a couple of occasions
but could not find the killer touch. Jacob and Tommy also had
half-chances. Louis and Max came on for Finn and Tommy, but pattern
of play continued with Cougars having more of the possession but not
able to find a way through an organized and pacy Gotherington defence.

At the back the boys were doing exactly what was asked of them.
George and in particular Lewis were strong and decisive, ensuring Will
was rarely under threat. Adam and Sam also defended strongly. As the
half went on, we had a couple of scares where Gotherington broke
through the midfield and we were outnumbered – but the back four dealt
well with any danger and looked comfortable.

At half time the message was more of the same and to be patient – but
also to ensure we continued to defend in front of the back four .
Freddie came off for a breather and Jacob dropped into midfield, with
Tommy replacing George as centre forward and Finn coming back onto the
right wing.

We then had a period where we dominated possession, with Jacob and
Ryan controlling the ball in the midfield, and Tommy and Max linking
well and finding the wide men. Again a number of chances were created
but no killer touch could be found – with crosses just floating over
the last head, shots going just wide or finding a Gotherington
defender. More changes were made to rotate the front line, but still
the boys could not find the second goal which their play deserved and
which would have settled the tie.

As the game went into the final quarter Gotherington gained confidence
and sensed they could get something. They pushed more players
forward, and began to cause more problems for our defence. Ryan and
Freddie were getting more stretched in front of the back four, and
tired legs meant some of our clearances were not as decisive as in the
first half. Gotherington's pressure finally told when one of their
defenders was clipped in the box and a penalty was given. For the
third time in four games Will went the right way, but was not able to
keep the ball out. 1-1 and five minutes to play. Although the
Cougars pushed for a winner, it was Gotherington who came closest,
with Will keeping a shot out and Sam making a goalline clearance.
The match finished 1-1.

The boys were down at the end as this was another scoreline which did
not reflect their domination in play over the 80 minutes. This has
happened on a number of matches this season where we have not put
teams away and allowed the opposition to remain in the game. It was a
good reminder that if you do not convert your chances, then teams will
always think they have a chance. At the end of the game, when legs
are tired, it is ever more important to win the first ball in defence
if you want to keep a clean sheet. Despite this there were still
lots of positives. In spite of the narrow pitch the boys continued to
play good football and for much of the second half dominated
possession with neat passing and moving. The defence was excellent
for much of the match – with Will having little to do until the final
quarter of the game because of the decisive way in which George, Lewis
and the full-backs played.

Man of the match was Sam – for another excellent performance as a
full-back/wing back. He continues to grow in confidence when coming
forward to support the midfield and forwards, and yet again his
communication was excellent. It is not often at this level you see
your full-back overlapping to cross in from the byline. Sam was
pushed close by Jacob who was a real attacking threat in the first
half and provided solidity in the middle when we needed this in the
second. Ryan and Fred were also excellent in controlling the match
from the midfield – they just need to be careful not to be dragged out
of position up the pitch when the game stretches late on.
Defensively, George and Lewis had one of their best games together –
in particular in the first half where they did not put a foot wrong.

This has still been one of our best League campaigns in recent years,
and the boys can look back proudly on how they have played and what
they have achieved. The margins are getting finer as the seasons
progress – and with a little more decisiveness in defence, and a
little more composure in front of goal, this could easily have been a
campaign where we finished in the top two.

We now have the Cup Final to look forward to at Cheltenham Town next
week – a great way to end what has been another good season.

Sunday 26/04 v Gotherington

Sunday we have our final league game of the season against Gotherington. This game will kick off at 1130 so we should aim to meet at 11. The game will be played at Malleson Road, Gotherington, GL52 9ET.

Gotherington sit 6th in the league on 26 points, while this is some way behind us we should expect a tough game. Our games against them are rarely straightforward and league positions often count for
nothing.

As before Mark will be taking the team for this fixture.

Squad for this game will be...

Will (Captain)
George (vice captain)
Lewis
Freddie
Jacob
Sam
Adam
Jorge
Tommy
Max
Finn
Ryan
Louis

Unavailable for this fixture are Luca, Dan H, Dan G, Ben, Taylor and Tom.

Play with the same composure and trust in your team mates that you did on Wednesday against Charlton Rovers Blues and you will get your rewards....

Cougars sing the blues...

Charlton Rovers Blues (1) v (5) LRFC Cougars

This was as dominant an LRFC Cougars performance as there ever has
been. With a squad stripped to the bare bones the starting line up had
an unfamiliar look about it with George in goal, Freddie dropping into
centre back alongside Lewis. Finn starting wide right, Tom wide left.
The full backs were Sam and Adam, the midfield pairing Ben and Ryan.
Up front Jorge with Tommy just behind. Jacob started on the bench
because he was tired.

From the off the Cougars dominated possession and were able to find
team mates in space with ease. There were early half chances that
couldn't be taken. It was a surprise when the opening goal came
against the run of play with Blues opening the scoring. A long ball
through the middle that the defence allowed to bounce and then failed
to cover. 1-0.

The Cougars didn't panic and kept playing their football. Finn and Tom
were getting on the ball more, Tom driving at the defence and Finn
full of tricks to buy space then using the ball intelligently. Finn
was also challenging and winning headers which was excellent to see.
Tommy and Jorge were always a threat and are developing quite an
understanding.

The equalising goal came from Tom, the ball played into the inside
left channel he lofted it, left footed, over the keeper. 1-1.

After this goal the result was rarely in doubt. The Cougars keeping
possession and the Reds just not able to cope with the movement and
passing. Sam, in particular had an excellent first half using the
space in front of him to support the attack and communicating with his
team mates. Ben was also talking while on the pitch and said a few
words at half time too.....the team ends more of this character.

The cougars scored next through Jacob, on as substitute, a corner was
headed goal wards by Sam.chis effort hit the cross bar with Jacob on
hand to finish from close range. 2-1 and how it would be at half time.

There were moments in this first half where the Cougars were putting
30 passes together with Blues chasing shadows.

Second half followed the same pattern of play. The cougars dominating
possession and but for profligacy in front of goal could have scored a
dozen. The third goal came from Jacob, Jorge then scored a fine
individual effort driving in from the touch line to beat the keeper.

The game would end 5-1 and it is no exaggeration to say that the
cougars enjoyed around 80% of the possession. 5-1 does not tell the
full story.

MotM was Ben for a solid and motivating performance. Always neat in
possession but talking to drive the team on. This was particularly
hard today though as every Cougar had a very good game and did what
they needed too. In May ways this had the atmosphere of a training
game. Blues were forced back by the Cougars play and limited to a
couple of attacks. When they did hit the target George was on hand to
make the save.

An excellent professional performance.

Sunday away to Gotherington

Sunday's (26/04) match will be an 1130am kick off - full details of squad and location to follow later this evening....

Cougars Cash Out with 7

Cashes Green Youth (4) v (7) LRFC Cougars

For the second week running the Cougars scored 7 goals, what was
different this time was that there were 6 goal scorers including 3
players opening their account for the season.

On a pitch that had such a slope you could be forgiven for thinking
that a belay might be required the cougars did start strong. With
Cashes winning the toss and electing to play up the slope, playing
down hill suited the Cougars passing style.

Tommy, starting in the number 10 role, was dictating the pace of the
game and linking well with the Cougars wide players. The first chance
came from this link with the ball being spun out to Luca his left
footed cross was hit goal-wards by Jorge but deflected wide for a
corner.

There were two further good chances spurned. First Tommy who saw a
shot drift wide and then Ryan who after a dribble a one-two hit a shot
that every Cougars fan wanted to see go in only for it to bobble
agonisingly wide.

The opening goal came for Cashes. With the Cougars losing their shape
in the middle of the pitch the ball was played long, as the Cashes
strike raced onto it Will had little option but to come out of his
goal. The Cashes player did well to play it to a team mate who scored
into a net beyond the Cougars defenders reach. 1-0.

The Cougars came back into the game with Jacob scoring with his first
touch following his introduction as a sub. A cross evading the defence
and keeper bundled in off his chest to make it 1-1. This was how it
was until half time.

Second half, the Cougars playing up the slope looked the more athletic
with the wingers providing a constant threat. Linking with Max in the
number 10 role who was now pulling the strings. The second Cougars
goal came from winger to winger. Jacob, who showed great skill on the
wing to evade tackles and find space, playing the ball centrally for
Luca, coming in from the other wing, to score with a neat side foot
under the keeper. 2-1.

Cashes equalised again with a penalty for a foul in the box. The
second time in a week that the Cougars have conceded in this manner.
Will made the first save and pushed the ball wide. Unfortunately not
quite wide enough and the striker had enough to score at the second
attempt. Will always goes the right way and the first save was
excellent. Having made that the second was always going to be
difficult.

The Cougars would extend their league when Ryan finished well beating
the keepers dive. The team enjoyed that goal and were all keen to
celebrate with him. If any player deserved a goal this season.....

The next goal was another first goal of the season. Tommy who has been
getting ever closer, denied on his debut by a cracking save from the
Lydney keeper, hitting the crossbar against Painswick and then somehow
back heeling the ball out against Charlton Rovers scored from a direct
free kick. Just outside the area on the right he sent his shot into
the far keeper leaving the keeper no chance. Lovely goal. This capped
a fine display which saw tommy earn the MotM award. He dictated the
play in the first half and as he settles into the team is becoming
more and more influential. At the heart of so much that was good about
us going forward today.

Ryan ran him very close, or rather ran-tackled-ran-repeat, but for
overall impact on the team Tommy stood out today. There were, as
usual, a number of candidates for MotM and this is how it should
always be for teams.

As the game progressed the Cougars were more and more in control
although with a direct style and physical approach cashes always
looked capable of scoring more.

There was a period towards the end where it was like a basketball
game. Jorge scored to widen the gap further only for Cashes to score
by return immediately. 5-3. Jorge scored again, a cute chip just over
the on rushing keeper, Cashes again for a break. 6-4.

There was time for one more account opening goal. Tommy playing a
cross where Ben was on hand to head home from close range. 7-4 and how
the game would end.

From a slow start this was an action packed football match with some
great moments of quality all over the pitch.

The defence played well against an onslaught of power play and
aggression. Sam in particular rising to the challenge after taking a
very heavy tackle then restoring his resolve to dominate his side of
the pitch.

Lewis and George at the heart of the defence look very strong together
and have pace to burn. Lewis standing firm at the back as George goes
walkabout with the ball. At one point he popped up on the left wing to
cross the ball into the box. It was a long run back to his position!

Adam and Dan G looked assured making the right decisions of when to
defend and when to attack. In midfield Ryan was, as ever, excellent
and to get a goal capped a fine display. Freddie was powerful today
but against a tenacious Cashes team who were snapping into challenges
was unable to be as expansive going forward as he would normally be.
Ben also played in the central role and after a shaky start started to
show the composure that we see regularly and was able to score his
first goal of the campaign.

On the wings Jacob and Luca were powerful and direct, they are the
outlet for this team and both got onto the score sheet again. Finn
started on theming today and had a great period where his decision
making was excellent, when to do a trick and then when to pass. As
Cashes came into the game more and more bypassing midfield he, along
with the midfield, were marginalised but this was a good display.

Jorge up from is always a threat, skill and composure in front of
goal. His brace today evidence of this finishing finesse.

Cashes did play well today and stretched the Cougars for long periods
of the game. Once the breakthrough came and there was a two goal
cushion the outcome did not look in doubt. Cashes, to their immense
credit, never let their heads drop and continued to battle for every
ball and decision.

The Cougars now have a mid-week fixture, this Wednesday, against
Charlton Rovers Blues before the final league match away to
Gotherington. There is then a week before the cup final against
Painswick.

With the Cougars coaches having a very difficult decision to make
around the squad for the cup final these final league matches are to
test and experiment with what the starting line up and squad should
be.

On current form the decision must be getting ever more impossible.

Cashes Green Youth Away

XFor the fourth time this season we face Cashes Green, this time in the league and away. Earlier this season we played them three times in four weeks and while we won each game (6-1 in the league, 4-2 in the League Cup then on penalties in the County Cup) they got closer to us on each occasion and we needed a penalty shoot out to go through in the County Cup after drawing 2-2. They are currently fourth in the league, one place and four points behind us having played two extra games.

We should expect a tough game but one that, if we play as we did on Sunday, should see us get the rewards...

The match is an away fixture and will be played at Elm Road Playing Field, Cashes Green, Stroud, GL5 4NJ. With kick off at 2pm we should aim to meet at 1:30.
(Note that from Cheltenham it is showing as 14 miles with an estimated journey time of 30 minutes).

The squad for the match will be...
  1. Will F (Captain)
  2. George G (Vice Captain)
  3. Lewis
  4. Freddie
  5. Dan G
  6. Jacob
  7. Sam
  8. Ben
  9. Luca
  10. Max
  11. Adam
  12. Ryan
  13. Jorge
  14. Finn
  15. Tommy
Tom, Taylor, Louis and Dan H are unavailable - note that we can only take a squad of 16 to matches (11 + 5).

A further reminder that the availability tracker is here. If there are gaps and the squad is full I can only assume unavailability.

Cougars give Reds the Blues...

Sunday April 12th
Charlton Rovers Reds (2) V (7) LRFC Cougars

The first half of this game, actually the first half of the first half saw the Cougars play some of their best football in what seemed like a long time. Failing to score in their last two matches they vanquished any thoughts of crisis with an opening display that set the tone of the match and assured the victory.

The attacking quartet, playing into the wind, managed the conditions perfectly with their quality in possession telling very early. The opening goal came from Jorge who was put through brilliantly by Jacob, playing wide on the right. Lifting the ball over the defender it dropped in Jorge's path for him to lob it over the keeper. Nice finish, 1-0.

The second goal came from a similar route. Jacob enjoying a lot of space wide right was sent through by Tommy, playing number 10, he crossed into the box where Luca was waiting he controlled the ball and finished past the keeper 2-0.

Jacob would then score himself capping an influential period for him and to make it 3-0 with barely 15 minutes played.

As good as the attacking players were the platform was provided by the midfield and defence that kept the pressure on the Reds and won possession back. Tom in centre midfield showed remarkable fitness levels that even those of us that have seen him perform like this are still amazed and impressed by. Playing alongside Ryan there was little chance that the Reds would breach that unit. The back four held firm, George restored following injury and with Lewis out Freddie dropping back alongside him. In full back positions Adam and Dan G.

In the first half the wind played a significant part with long passes hit by the Reds running out of play. With the angle of the wind Dan G was the busier of the full-backs and he played accordingly. Always motivated when playing against his old team today was no different.

Will made an excellent save early on and as the first half progressed needed to be secure in his handling as Reds hit long shots that flew at the goal, wind assisted.

The first half ended 3-0 to the Cougars and with some of the best football we have played being on display.

Reds came out for the second half much more determined and pushed the Cougars back into their own half and penalty box. A resultant corner saw the Reds awarded a penalty for pushing. The penalty was scored emphatically, a thunderbolt high to Wills left. He went the right way - he always does......

As the game progressed the outlet for the Cougars was on the wing and on the right where Luca had replaced Jacob. Outpacing his marker he finished low from an acute angle to bag his brace. The hat-trick would follow in similar fashion with his fourth being all about desire and anticipation. With the Reds defence failing to deal with the clearance he raced onto the loose ball to beat the keeper from close range. Louis would also score with a shot/cross that drifted on the wind over the keeper.

The Reds would score their second goal with a fine individual effort from their number 8. Running from deep his powerful shot evading Will.

Tommy came close to opening his account for the Cougars. Luca reaching a ball down the left and playing it across goal but behind Tommy's run. Tommy hung a leg out but ended up somehow back-heeling the ball clear!

There was a lot of quality on display today, Cougars passed the ball excellently and attacked as a unit. The trio of Jacob, Tommy and Luca behind Jorge worked hard, linked well and showed the right desire and power that Reds could not cope with. That Cougars were three goals up inside 15minutes is testament to this. This was Tommy's best game for the Cougars so far, he's settling into the side and starting to influence play as he learns about his team mates and how we play.

Defensively cougars were strong today, rotation did not affect our stability. Freddie started at centre back, Dan G also played there as did Ryan for much of the second half. In full back Dan G and Adam started but were replace with Sam and Tom as the game progressed. Ben came on in centre midfield to apply some composure on the ball and, as ever, did not put a foot wrong.

Tom and Jacob were serious contenders for the MotM but when a player scores four goals then it's hard not to give it to them. Well done to Luca but more importantly well done to all the lads for a serious team performance that puts us back on the right road.

With Painswick beating Lydney both teams are coming into form as the final approaches. Cougars are still pushing for 2nd in the league and need to maintain this form over the final 3 league matches. Next up are Cashes Green on 19/04.

Sunday 12/04 - League Match

Sunday we are back in league action as the countdown to the season end begins.

We are away to Charlton Rovers Reds with the match to be played at Priors Playing Field on Imjin Road, GL52-5JU.

The Reds currently sit in 5th spot in the division 6 points behind us on the same games played. We know this team very well and so know to expect a tough encounter. While top spot in the division is now beyond us we are competing for second and to have positive momentum going into the cup final on May 3rd could be invaluable. Lydney look to have the league sown up although we should take confidence from the fact the only blot on their 100% record is a defeat to us.

The match kicks off at 2pm so lets meet for 1:30 to prepare. Weather conditions are warming up so make sure the lads have plenty to drink for during and after the game.

Squad for the match will be...

1. Will (Captain)
2. George G (Vice Captain)
3. Freddie
4. Ben
5. Jacob
6. Ryan
7. Luca
8. Louis
9. Finn
10. Sam
11. Adam
12. Jorge
13. Dan G
14. Tommy
15. Tom

Unavailable for this fixture are
  • Lewis
  • Dan H
With Taylor to confirm.

Work hard and be brave!

Training

With a match this Sunday training resumes on Wednesday at Naunton Park
from 18:30-19:30.

See you there!
