League Match v Churchdown Panthers 22/12

Churchdown Panthers (3) V (1) LRFC Cougars

When you concede a goal after 1 minute and 24 seconds you might think that you are in for a long afternoon and a drubbing. While we did lose the game we did not let our heads drop despite the early set-back and we actually got ourselves back into the game.

A late switch of venue as Naunton Park was under-water meant we played away at Churchdown. The pitch was in remarkable condition considering the monsoon that Cheltenham had overnight.

Churchdown are a quality side and have been a strong opposition every time we have faced them. Today was no different. In recognition of this we set-up in a 4-51 formation with the emphasis being on being fully committed to the game and staying solid as a team. Defending as a unit and when the opportunities presented themselves attacking as a unit too. The early exchanges came down our left with the conditions forcing play across to that side of the pitch. The Churchdown striker was the outlet and the duel between him and George was an excellent spectacle. Both playing at top speed and full commitment. Willbo and Louis, both on the left, had a busy first half with Willbo putting in an excellent first half performance where he was tested to his limits. In the middle Jacob and Tom were busy breaking up play and trying to stem the flow. With Will T alongside them they were constantly looking forward to spring Dan against the defenders and try to turn the play.

The opening goal was an excellent finish. The ball was swung in from the Churchdown right and drifted towards the far post. We failed to win the ball in the air and the Churchdown attacked hooked the ball into the top of the net. By no means an easy finish. We were then under the cosh for a long period before we started to get some joy pushing forward. Tom was starting to get onto the ball and drive at the Churchdown defence. What we were missing was the final pass, from wherever we were trying the final ball would just not fall.

The outlet was always the wings and Will F was finding Louis with his goal kicks time and again. Louis was linking with Tom and Will T but again when we needed a final pass it was just awry. On the right Luca and Fred were linking well and Luca had occasion to stretch his legs a couple of times and drive at the Churchdown defence. Late in the half he hit a cross that drifted agonisingly wide of the post despite lunges from both Dan and Will T who were just unable to make a connection. At right back Fred was playing excellently ad with his nimble feet danced his way clear on more than one occasion where he really should not have been able to. At one point he was likened to Nijinsky....the dancer not the race horse ;)

Ben started at centre-back and was assured when called upon as we have come to expect. Rarely putting a foot wrong and rarely needing more than one or two touches to do his thing. Where we struggled was when the ball was in the air and with the power of the Churchdown team. When we got possession we struggled to keep the ball and were trying to catch them on the break through the pace and guile of the wingers, the pace and power of Dan and the drive of Will T.

That Churchdown were not more than one goal up at half time was down to the defenders and, in particular, Will who made some excellent saves. Marshalled his area excellently and showed calm and accurate distribution despite wild conditions. This was, on a day of excellent performances, a captains and MotM display.

Second half the wind was more into our faces and with tired legs we were defending much deeper than we had been and much deeper than was safe to do. Goals were still not forthcoming though. Last ditch tackles and more saves by Will keeping us in the game. The half was not very old when we hd possibly our best spell, turning the Churchdown players and getting some breaks through the middle and wide. Louis proved a great outlet hugging the left touchline. We were unable, though, to turn this into meaningful chances. The second goal came midway through the half with the Churchdown striker breaking through the middle to finish high over Wills head. A good goal that Will had no chance of saving.

Our substitute for the game arrived with the second half about 15 minutes old. Some miscommunication meant that Lewis thought the game was cancelled. he arrived and sauntered over at which he was told to warm up and get ready as he was going on. A change was made with Freddie coming off for a breather and Lewis going to right back. a few moments later some more shuffling saw Tom deployed to right back, Ben pushing into midfield and Lewis restored to more familiar territory in the heart of the defence.

Churchdown scored their third goal from their left winger who scored an excellent individual goal finishing past Will from close range. At three nil we looked shattered. The effort that had been put in all over the pitch was starting to tell. We then lost two players, first Tom to a turned ankle and then Will T, also with a turned ankle, a repeat of his injury against Painswick. With a few minutes remaining and the game effectively lost we continued with 10 men. Dan then scored. Put through the middle he outpaced and out-muscled the defence to finish past the keeper. 3-1 and how the game would end.

There was lots to admire in this game. Two teams playing football the right way. A competitive game played in great spirit. From the Cougars point of view it was simple, play as if you were going to lose and you would lose. What we wanted was a game played with passion and commitment. What is the point of not leaving it all on the pitch? Give your all and what will be will be. Conceding so early meant that we were never really in the game, and we did lose the match, but we did not make it easy for Churchdown and we made a real game of it.

Every one of the players gave their all and raised their game a few notches. That is something that we have not done enough of this season and something that leaves us feeling very proud of every one of them.

Painswick hoo-doo

Cheltenham Youth League
Painswick Youth (4) v (0) LRFC Cougars
King George V Playing field, Bisley

Sunday was a tough day at the office. What did this game show? Well it showed, primarily, that we need to be more physical and competitive against the better teams. The problems that have dogged us for a couple of seasons remain the same. The second half of this game we struggled to get going and compete....

But the game also showed the importance of decisions.   A very harsh offside call against Dan running clean through on goal resulted in a free kick. From that free-kick Painswick pump the ball forward and win a penalty, which also looked a harsh decision on Jacob who was clearing the ball for a corner.

At this point the game was 0-0, and while Painswick had better possession they never really created a clear cut chance. Whilst we were defending deep when we broke forward we looked dangerous. Playing counter attacking football and looking particularly effective down the left with Louis linking well with Tom, Dan, Will T and behind them Will D defending well. As one of the centre-backs, George was in full fireman mode putting out fires all over the pitch.

For his constant energy, drive and ferocious tackling George was the MotM. Other particularly strong performances were from Tom who never stopped working and Will T who also never stopped working and was trying to drive the team on at every opportunity.
Trouble, though, started when we started losing players. After about 10 minutes we lost Luca to his continuing knee problems (curse you osgood schlatters). This meant pushing Will T to wide right from the number 10 role and bringing Max on. We then lost Will T to a clash of heads. He asked to come off the pitch which was the clearest indication that something was wrong with him. He would come back on but didn't really look like he was 100%. His match was over mid-way through the second half when he turned his ankle. In the second half we also lost Will F in goal who making a brave save at the feet of the Painswick attacker took a heavy knock on his knee. Jacob donned the gloves to take up a rare position between the posts that he does at least once a season.  We finished with three players carrying injuries, again showing the benefits of having a full squad.

The last action of the first half was the ball flying high into our goal from the penalty spot. If the offside against Dan is not given that doesn't happen. We either score or it stays 0-0. Half time was tough as the lads were doubly down. The message was to keep going, 1-0 down we were still in game. Second half started and with the lads all pushing forward we got caught at the back. The pacy Painswick striker clearing the defence and, despite George racing back to challenge, slotting past Will who had no chance.  2-0.

Still there was around 20 minutes to play. The final 20 minutes we created a couple of half chances that the keeper saved. As we continued to chase the game Painswick would score 2 more goals to put a gloss on the final result. If you're losing 2-0 you may as well have a go and lose 4-0 as Kevin Keegan might very well have said once. Some tired legs on a big pitch - probably from rugby and other weekend sports - meant we never really played at our best or looked like turning it around.

The 3rd goal was a good strike that showed our frailty at being decisive in certain areas. The Painswick player bursting inside from the left wing position outpacing and evading the defence to fire low into the far corner. The best goal of the game. There was time for a 4th which flew in off a heavy deflection leaving Jacob no chance.  Jacob also made a couple of excellent saves to keep Painswick at bay.

The match finished 4-0.
Decisions can change matches and while there is, obviously, no guarantee of an outcome, two decisions at the critical moment in this game did change the pattern. It is difficult to pick yourself up from that. That said, the comments at the start of this report hold true. We need to get tougher and more competitive. Show more aggression towards the ball. Close down opposition players quickly, and be more positive when we have the ball. We have to recognize that Painswick were much better at that, and that made the difference.

Get well soon Jorge....

Jorge was unavailable today as he injured his knee playing rugby
yesterday. It looks like the injury is worse than first thought and we
will be without him until sometime in the New Year.

We all wish him a speedy recovery.

Anything Man City can do...

Bishops Cleeve Colts United (0) V (6) LRFC Cougars

A return to league action following the international break saw us pitched against one of the Bishops Cleeve teams, this time it was Bishops Cleeve Colts United. Playing on the Kayte Lane pitch it there was an impeccable minutes silence before kick-off in memory of Jim Harding.

We lined up in a 4-5-1 formation with the intent being to keep both wingers wide and have bodies in midfield to win the ball. We started very slow and but for some out-standing keeping from Will could have been 1-0 down. The Cleeve shot destined for the net was met full stretch by Will to push it away. It was a warning and a great save. Shortly afterwards we opened the scoring with Luca finishing following great work from Will T on the right. Bursting through Will's shot was well saved by the keeper who was unable to hold the ball it falling kindly for Luca to finish into the corner.

The second goal came very soon afterwards. Will T fouled in the box and duly despatching the penalty to the keepers right. The decision seemed a little harsh but if it's given you have to take it.

There was then a period of play where Cleeve dominated possession although never really created a clear chance. With our players pushing forward there were large gaps in midfield. But for typically stout defending from Lewis, George, Willbo and Dan G it could have been a very different outcome. We made changes to get a grip on the game. Freddie came on in the holding role and made an immediate impact. As did Sam coming on at right back and putting in an MotM performance. When he has the opportunity to break forward from deep you really see the best of Sam. Excellent supporting the midfield and strikers and put in some great defensive work too.

The goal of the game came from the boot of Jorge to put us 3-0 up. Coming down the inside right he played two one-two's with Jacob then Will T to finish beyond the keeper's dive. A really great team goal and a rare moment of quality on a day where we didn't play with the same tempo and sharpness that we have of late. Will T was a constant threat on either wing, on the opposite wing Louis was doing more defensive work than normal in support of his full-back. Dan G looked strong and assured in the right back position and then latterly on the left. Jacob, back to his best, was typically busy in midfield. Tracking back and supporting the attack at every opportunity he would score a goal to put us 4 up at half time.

The message at half time was to release the ball quicker and communicate. The pitch was quite lumpy which may have played apart but we were trying to dribble too much.

The game played out in the same manner but with two more goals to come. Jacob scored his second picking up a loose ball in the box to head home following good work from Callum and then Freddie who was unlucky not to score himself. Jacob would then, on his hat-trick, hit the post with a well struck shot. Tony's money is safe for another week.....

The final goal came from Luca. Jorge driving in from the right skipped past a number of challenges before slipping the goal to Luca who struck his shot across goal into the bottom left corner. It was the final action of the game.

This was a good result if not, necessarily, a great performance.

The pitch did not help but the same issues of indecision in defensive positions remain. We were also holding the ball too long, when we move it quickly we get our rewards. We need to do that against all opposition. That said the positives today were a clean sheet, Will F's distribution and commanding of his area grows with every game and he is really starting to develop a relationship with his centre backs when he comes flying out to make clearances. Sam at right back was excellent today both defending and supporting the attack. Lewis and Willbo in defence were strong Lewis in particular showed great athleticism to make excellent interceptions. Once he realises how big and strong he is he will be unstoppable! Will T was constant energy and drive on the wing with Louis putting in a more defensive performance than he would expect. Freddie is showing more and more mobility and great strength to support his undoubted skills. Jorge scored a cracking goal today and showed flashes of great skill on the ball. Ben was neat and tidy in possession and is yet to put a foot wrong. Completely composed on the ball whether in defence or midfield. Tom was typically bustling and must be a nuisance to play against. Just when you think you've shaken him off he pops up again....and again.... and again...and again...... Callum played much of the second half and was instrumental in Jacobs second goal. Luca didn't really get an opportunity to stretch his legs and the defence but whenever given the ball was prepared to take his man on and try to create.

So what do we need to do? It's really simple. We keep playing this way with tempo and commitment but...... we start to win the ball when it is in the air and compete more and we release the ball quicker so that the attributes of out attacking players can be used effectively. We have abundant pace through the attack but do not always get the best out of it.

We have a weekend off with no game on 1st December. Our next match is now on 8th December away to Painswick. Check the tracker here and if you've any gaps in availability please contact me to confirm.

*Man City beat Tottenham by the same scoreline today.

Is this the best first touch ever?

Ronaldinho showing unbelievable touch and then humiliates his teammate.....

https://vine.co/v/hrvIH7bOnYi

Lydney FC (1) V (1) LRFC Cougars

The first half of this match was the best that this team has ever played.

We played high up the pitch keeping Lydney pinned into their own half. The interplay between the wingers, front men and midfielders was just excellent. One and two touch football with then driving runs down both wings and through the middle with Dan absolutely destroying the defence with his pace and power. With George, Lewis Freddie and Willbo keeping things shored up at the back we dominated the early exchanges. George went close but pulled his shot just wide. Dan H then did the same. Luca then went close with a right footed drive and Will T warmed the keepers hands with some typical driving runs and shots. As we watched from the sidelines there was a sense that we could fall behind such was our dominance but without any end product. The opening goal came midway through the half with Dan finally breaking the Lydney keepers stoic resolve to put us 1-0 up. That we were still only 1-0 up by half time was testament to the keeper who had an absolute blinder. One save in particular where he tipped a goal bound shot onto the roof of the net was just excellent.

Second half and the game was different. Lydney came out fast and more direct. The composure that we had shown in the first half was disappearing and Lydney had their tails up. Some squad arrangements were made to try and tighten things up and get on the ball again. We started to get on the ball more but Lydney were always a threat. The equalising goal came from a strong break by Lydney. The ball played in wrong-footing the defence, leaving the striker to finish high into the net off the underside of the cross bar. Will had no chance with it.

The game then started to open up more as tired legs were evident. Dan was still our biggest threat and would see the keeper make yet more saves from him and then with the keeper beaten see his shot bounce back off the post. It just wasn't to be. The final 10 minutes were tense with both teams going for the winner and nervous about conceding. In the final moments we had shots that drifted just wide of the post and were then cleared by the Lydney defenders. It was kitchen sink time.

The game finished 1-1. It is a good result against a very strong tea that will be up there at the end of the season but it is also one that we could have and should have won. We created enough chances first half to be 4 or 5 up. Lydney for their endeavour and early pressure in the second half did not create that many opportunities.

The first half we played the best football we have ever played. The team was balanced with the right mix of pace, skill and effort. All the players fulfilled their roles excellently. There was no weak performance. Dan H grabbed the headlines with a display of power and pace, George was imperious at the back snuffing out any breaks by Lydney. Tenacious in the tackle and brave in the challenge this was an MotM performance. Tom in midfield was everywhere, breaking up play and driving forward all the time. His link up play down the left was excellent and his energy unbounded. We can only imagine that he has has solar panels that he plugs into every night.

Freddie at the back was also excellent and had a great moment lobbing the ball over a Lydney attackers head then controlling the ball to then play it forward. The other standout performance of the match was Ben. Alternating between centre-back and midfield he did not put a foot wrong and importantly won many headers to enable us to keep the pressure right on Lydney. Something that we need to be better at but that is difficult to practice on astroturf at Cheltenham College.

Will in goal marshalled his area well and showed excellent composure when dealing with some spicy back passes. Lucky for us he is almost as good with his feet as he is with his hands.

This was an excellent performance against a strong opposition. We could have won and on another day we would have. It is not an exaggeration to say that the overall MotM was probably the Lydney keeper.

Deja vu...

Southside FC U14's (2) V (4) LRFC Cougars
Burrows
10-Nov-2013

Same teams, same pitch, different day and different competition. The message at the start of this match was that this would be a tougher proposition as Southside would have felt they would have us figured out.

Lining up in a very different format to normal we started in a 4-2-4 formation that would be when we were attacking would be 2-4-4 and when defending 4-4-2. The full backs and wingers being asked to support play in both directions. This was in acknowledgement of the amount of possession that we had in the previous week when we played Southside in the league.

The game would follow an almost identical pattern of play as last week. Cougars playing up the slope against a pacy and strong Southside team. Southside playing much more centrally and with the Cougars trying to use the width of the pitch. We dominated early possession with Jacob and Will T covering a huge amount of ground in the middle of the pitch to keep the ball and spread the play wide at every opportunity. With Freddie and Harvey overlapping from the full-back positions and Louis and Luca covering the wings we were dominating but, again, without creating any clear chances. Up front Daniel and Max were making very similar runs, both pulling out wide to get the ball but then having no-one to pass to centrally. At centre back, George and Ben were linking well with George flying into tackles and Ben confident and assured in possession.

The opening goal came from Southside. A break through the middle and the ball going beyond Will into the corner. 1-0 down but no reason to panic. We made some changes bringing Jorge into attack for Max with the instruction to play much more centrally and stay as point man. Dan was instructed to do the movement out wide with Jorge the outlet centrally. At the back Harvey made way for Willbo in left back position.

The equalising goal came shortly afterwards, Southside under pressure failed to clear their lines properly and with the keeper out of the goal Jorge finished coolly from outside the area into an empty net over the crowd of players. 1-1 and how the half would finish. In central midfield Will T was catching the eye, playing with his head up and always finding a team mate the link between him and Jacob was excellent. Similarly Freddie was always an outlet on the right and started excellently communicating when playing the ball forward. Something we all still need to do!

Tom had joined the throng in midfield with Will T pushing up front and Daniel making way. Tom played an absolute stormer and was heard to confess to being exhausted at the end of the game - something he's not admitted ever before. Ever!

Further changes were made 5 minutes into the half with Will T moving wide left. Almost immediately he scored the goal that put us into the lead. Receiving the ball he rolled the defender and sent his shot beyond the 'keeper. 2-1. Playing down the slope we completely dominated possession with Tom becoming more and more influential, liking well with Louis and Harvey, back on at left back. With 4 serviceable substitutes, we lost Lewis to a knee injury following his morning rugby exertions, we made changes more frequently rotating the players through different positions. Will got his second following his switch to the right wing, that put us 3-1 up. Jorge would add a 4th and there was time for Southside to get one back although by now the game was over.

There was a cameo appearance from Callum coming onto the right wing. He made an excellent contribution playing some good early crosses that we were unlucky not to score from. He also went close with a shot late on in the game.

There was time for Southside to put us under some pressure before the end with their pacy defender stretching his legs and attacking us down the wing. His pace and strength seeing him fly past most of our team. Some last ditch defending kept him at bay but it was a warning and a glimpse of what he was capable of.

Will T was the MotM for an all round excellent game and for scoring the goals early in the second half to set us on our way to victory. The other stand-out performances, Harvey at left-back and Tom centrally were also excellent.

Another solid team performance. Some of our passing was a little awry particularly when pushing wide, communication will go a long way to helping this. We also continue to be reticent to head the ball from goal kicks. This is something we really need to start doing as it turns the opposition immediately from their own possession.

The semi-final of the C&G Cup is to be played in March where we will face Churchdown Panthers Colts.

Southside Part 2 - The Cup...

This Sunday is the second match in our double-header with Southside FC, this time in the cup.

We may have won last week but rest assured Southside will think they have figured us out so we will need to be on our game this Sunday.  Again, we are the away team with the match being played at the Burrows. We should therefore aim to meet at 1:30pm for the 2pm kick-off.

I keep saying it but it's working. We need to play at the tempo we have been in matches and training - moving the ball at pace. That is what we are good at.

Don't worry about the games played column....

squint and we are top of the league....

Southside Part 1

Southside FC (1) V (4) LRFC Cougars

This was an odd game to watch. Particularly the first half. We dominated possession, were camped in the Southside half and yet barely mustered a shot. We kept the ball well and if we did lose it won it back very quickly. But still those efforts on goal would not come.

We did start to get some traction down the left through Will T who was able to fire some long shots but nothing that really troubled the keeper. Down the right Dan and Luca were starting to link with Sam, who was the MotM, providing a solid platform for them to try and get clear. With Southside only playing one up front our full backs were able to stretch the match and support the attacks, this was reliant on them staying wide to receive the ball. For the first half and then latterly in the second half Sam was able to do this to great effect.

The opening goal came from a corner. A Southside corner. On a rare foray into our half they won a corner. The ball was crossed and was met in a cracking header by the Southside midfielder. A really well taken goal. Totally against the run of play.

The pattern of play continued and with the game still at 1-0 Southside won another corner. Detailing Dan to mark the Southsider that had scored previously the ball came in, Dan jumped and won the ball. A great defensive header. We did get back into the game before the half was up. George (G) in full Roberto Carlos/David Luiz mode (depending on your age!) was driving through midfield from defence and popped up in the left wing position where he won a corner. Dan duly took the corner crossing low from the left with the ball flying in at the near post from the boot of a Southside defender. A very odd way to get back into the game. 1-1 at half time.

The team talk at half-time was to keep playing the same way but also to try and get some zip into the play. Despite playing well there was a lack of energy in each of the lads. Perhaps a week using more internet bandwidth on Xbox games than most corporations would need was taking a toll? The 2nd half kicked off and very shortly afterwards the breakthrough goal came. Max threaded a ball between the centre backs for Dan to chase, his toe-ender rolling beyond the on-rushing keeper. This was, pretty much his first chance on goal and he took it well.

There were two more goals both from Will T. The second of which a sliding finish from excellent work between Tom, Louis and Max on the left. Late in the game Southside lost a player to injury that meant changing their keeper and seeing out the game with 10 men. They remained resilient and keeping one player up front were still trying to cause us problems at the back.

Today we played well against an opposition that was much stronger than in our previous two games, we played at the tempo we set and in the manner that we have been doing so. We kept moving the ball quickly and with purpose. When we play like this it is difficult for teams to get the ball. What was also pleasing today was that when we did lose it we were quick to get back into shape and win it back. The more defensive lads in the team doing this particularly well today, Lewis, Ben, George, Freddie, Sam and Jacob all competing and giving a platform for the team to attack from. That we also attack from so many positions will cause teams problems as if they nullify one of our wingers or our striker we have quality on the other wing too, and excellent players from midfield that can all strike a ball. That versatility is one of the great things about this team and it served us well again today.

Next week we have Southside again, this time in the cup. As much as we learned from today Southside will also have seen how we play and what we do. We will need to do what we did today again next week and maybe even a little better.

Southside Double Header

Our League and Cup double header with Southside U14's starts this coming Sunday (03/11) with the league fixture.

We are the away team with the match being played at the Burrows. We should therefore aim to meet at 1:30pm for the 2pm kick-off.

Southside U14's are currently 12th in the division with one win in five matches played. They have however played some of the teams you would expect to be challenging at the top of the table and so this by no means tells the full story.

What we need to remember is to just play the match. Not worry about league positions but take the game as it is and play it with the tempo and intensity that we have been in the last few weeks. This is both in matches and also the work we have been doing in training.

The squad for the game will be as follows.

1. Will F (Captain)
2. Ben
3. George
4. Sam
5. Max
6. Louis
7. Luca
8. Freddie
9. Daniel
10. Jacob
11. George
12. Will D
13. Lewis
14. Tom
15. Will T
16. Harvey

Dan G

Please note that this is based on responses to availability - we have a large squad and only 16 are eligible for match-days (11 starters and 5 substitutes). Please review this document and if there are gaps let me know.

I'll take a dozen thank-you.....

LRFC Cougars (12) v (1) Cheltenham Saracens
The Burrows

On an unseasonably pleasant October afternoon the Cougars returned to league action. With possibly the strongest squad we can field we were able to include new signing Will Tunnicliff.

Cheltenham Saracens have not had a great start and were bottom of the league with three defeats from three matches. Although looking at their results they were defeats by the odd goal or two.

Playing as the home team at Burrows we were on pitch #1 which was our old home pitch and venue where we had some great results.

Starting in a 4-2-3-1 formation with a back 4 of Willbo, Ben, George and Palmer, the holding two (that's HOLDING for Toms benefit) were Jacob and Tom! In front of them Louis out left, Max through the middle and Luca right. Dan the striker. Will Fenley in goal.

Playing up the slope in the first half we started strong. It was clear early on that the wingers were the outlet ball. After some initial midfield exchanges Tom broke forward, he played a pass switching play to Dan who on the inside left position opened his body and finished with a strong side foot into the far corner. A great pass and excellent taken goal. A great start. This was closely followed by a goal from Luca, bursting through from the right wing position he finished beyond the keeper. 2-0, nerves settled and while there was still a lot of football to play we were able to relax.

At the back Ben was composed and assured on the ball. Efficient in possession taking only 1 or 2 touches to push the ball forward. Alongside him George was picking up all the loose balls and making interceptions. With Freddie wide right an outlet and Willbo showing tenacity and composure we looked very strong defensively.

In attacking positions the goals continued. Dan would complete a hat-trick as would Jorge. There was a brace for Will T on his debut (including a memorable goal with the outside of his left boot over the keeper into the far corner) a goal apiece for Louis, Jacob, Tom and Luca. It's been a long time since we scored 12 goals in a game. All of which was underpinned by an out-standing performance in the number 10 position by Max.

A game in which he pulled the strings and had the strikers and wide players dancing to his tune. The puppet master. It was said from the touch line that Max could make a zimmerframe unsteady such is his ability. Gliding through the game and threading passes as the game wore on he showed great energy and commitment tracking Saracens runners as the broke from defence. It was a very deserved MotM performance for a class player.

Once again we played great football, we passed the ball quickly and decisively. We were able to make a number of substitutions without affecting the pattern of play. We also had the boys playing different positions, Jacob playing central midfield and centre back, Ben playing the same positions. Sam and Freddie alternating between right full back and right side of midfield. Jorge played striker, number 10 and holding midfielder. Will T played holding midfielder and wide left. Versatility.

That's what we want and sometimes when short of players for games what we need. The tempo we have been playing in training and in the last two matches is starting to develop into a pattern of play. The lads are becoming more and more comfortable playing a quick passing game which is something we have always tried to do since we started as a league club all those years ago.

Saracens, to their credit, did not let their heads drop and when an opportunity in front of goal presented itself late on they took it. With us playing an increasingly high line there was space in behind. A ball played through and the Saracens striker fired a shot over Wills head leaving him no chance. 12-1 and how the game would finish.

We have training on Wednesday (23/10) and then a break as it's half term. There's no game next Sunday (27/10) and no training the following Wednesday (30/10). We return to action on 03/11 with a league match against Southside - this is the start of a double header with Southside who we will face again in the league cup quarter final the following week.

We need to try and maintain our momentum over the break and continue this excellent form.

New Signing

We are very pleased to confirm that after negotiations long into the night we have signed Will Tunnicliff in time to make his debut in tomorrow's league match. With interest from Belgium, Kosovo and at the last minute Turkey there were some tense moments before he finally put pen to paper.

Catching up with him after signing he said "it was a dream come true" and that he has always supported Leckhampton even before he could walk and talk. There were bigger offers on the table but as he said "when you bleed green there's only one club you can play for" - on hearing that he bleeds green we dispensed with the need for a medical instead opting for a slap on the back and welcome to the club. (That appearing to be what Real Madrid did with Gareth 'herniated disc' Bale).

Will is a quality signing for the team and a familiar face to all the lads.

Welcome aboard Will.

C&G U14 League Cup Round 1 - LRFC Cougars v Cleeve Wanderers

LRFC Cougars (11) v (1) Cleeve Wanderers

This game could have quite easily been sponsored by The North Face or
by Scottish trawler men such were conditions at the start. With
Cheltenham succumbing to a monsoon over the last 48hrs there was some
debate as to whether the game would go ahead or not. Cue Farmer Fenley
and his trusty pitch-fork. Faster than a subway sandwich in any of the
lads hands he zipped between penalty areas prodding his fork into the
turf to help the drainage. Like Moses he pushed back the water to make
the pitch playable, some games across the town may have been cancelled
but not on his watch.......

To the match....... the final score of 11-1 should make this an easy
report to write but it is only part of the story. Cleeve Wanderers sit
bottom of our division having lost all three of their opening games,
they arrived with only 10 players. It was always going to be an uphill
task for them. While we have not been in good form of late we made
sure not only of the result but also the manner of result.

Lining up in a 4-2-3-1 formation the intent, hope, was that we would
start fast and strong, settle the nerves and then build from there.
Not taking anything for granted and showing our opponents the utmost
respect.

We settled almost immediately with Dan bursting through from the right
wing to finish past the keepers dive. 1-0 up, nerves settled and the
tone set. There would be 10 more goals, (Dan with 2 more for his
hat-trick, Luca and Max with a brace each, Jacob, Jorge, Louis and Tom
with 1 each).

The score was 6-0 at half time, Cleeve then opened the scoring in the
first half with a goal following a goal mouth scramble.

We should not get too carried away with this result, but the
performance is something else. We played as we have been playing in
training. The instruction to the lads to use 2 and 3 touches to keep
the ball moving quickly and to play with zip and energy. We did this
today in all positions. We were able to make changes without
disrupting the pattern of play and retain possession. Ultimately
though we need to remember that this was against 10, spirited, men.

We did however score some lovely goals, Dan's hat-trick was all about
power, pace and directness and he was largely the architect of his
goals too. Louis scored an excellent goal from wide right bending it
left footed beyond the keepers dive. Jorge scored with a nice flick
from a great cross from Louis in the left wing position. Luca's goals
both came from inside the box, smart footwork and clinical finishing.
Max scored his brace, with some sweet footwork as he danced through
the throng. Jacob, in a rare role as striker scored from close range
and would also hit the cross bar with a long range free-kick. We
should also acknowledge that the Cleeve keeper made a number of good
saves through the game.

Tom finally got onto the scoresheet after having had more shots than
the team put together. It became a bit of a personal duel between him
and the keeper and the upright. He hit the post twice, had shots saved
or cleared off the line and shots that flew just wide. When his goal
eventually came it was a sliding half volley that left the keeper with
no chance. There was great team spirit as the lads celebrated with
him.

We showed good versatility in this game too with a number of players
playing in different positions without affecting the overall pattern
of play. We also showed tactical versatility in switching, early in
the match, from a 4-2-3-1 to a 3-2-3-2 formation and at times playing
3-1-4-2 as Cleeve withdrew further to protect their lines.

Where we also performed well, but were unable to apply the finishing
touch, was with balls into the box. We sent a number of crosses across
the face of goal but were not able to get a head onto them to apply
the finish. When you consider the performance of the keeper and how
the defence faired this could have been a lot more. Credit to Cleeve
for not letting their heads drop through what was a tough afternoon.

There will almost certainly be sterner tests to come in both the
league and cup - what we should take from this performance is the
confidence to play our way and impose that on any opposition.

We asked for a reaction and the lads gave us that. As a result the
team was awarded the MotM award today as to single anyone out would
have felt wrong.

Next up in the cup are Southside in what will be the quarter-final.
The game will be played at the Burrows on 10th November with a 2pm
kick off. Before that though there is a return to league action with
Cheltenham Saracens away at the Burrows next Sunday.

Let's build on today and take that tempo and work rate into the next match.

The last word has to be "Pete's Trousers" (i know that was two and now
they're not even the final words but still.....)

Cougars get the Blues

This is not a reference to the lads attending a John Lee Hooker
concert, if only. M
ore that this was a game that, on paper, we
should have won. But as a cleverer person than me once said the games
not played on paper.

First half we never really got going. We were quiet, there was no zip
in the play. No energy. The defence was holding well enough and
Freddie in midfield, again, caught the eye but going forward we were
not playing as a unit. Hitting hopeful balls to Luca up front to
chase. With the Blues defending in numbers this was not going to be a
tactic that worked. We needed to drag them out of position.

Louis was the best outlet for this and made a number of superb runs
from the left wing. As the game progressed his link-up play with
Harvey was excellent and saw him get into more dangerous positions
although we still failed to register a shot.

The opening goal came to the Blues. From the inside left position we
failed to clear our lines. With Will out of position trying to plug
the gap the ball was played across our area and buried. I think they
call that a sweaty goal. 1-0 down but with plenty of time.

The half played out and it was apparent who was more up for it and it wasn't the team in green. The lads were elsewhere. At half time with
the score at 1-0 they were flat. We fired them up as best we could and
sent the back out there. There was a reaction.

Sam, playing wide right started to get more involved and was driving
at the defence every opportunity he had. Sam would take a couple of
heavy challenges for his efforts that went unnoticed and unpunished.
Freddie supporting Sam from the inside midfield position showed quick
feet and good strength on more than one occasion. With Louis still
marauding up front every chance he got things were turning.

That said we still failed to register a shot and on the break the
Blues were always a threat.

There was then the first of two turning points. With a couple of fouls
not being given in our favour two of our players challenged the
referee and were booked for dissent. The details are irrelevant but
serve as a notice that we must respect the referees decision even if
we do not agree with it.

As the game progressed, and with no real options on the bench.
Actually there wasn't even a bench today, we went to 3 at the back,
pushing Harvey into midfield. This served to put the game more into
the Blues half and Jacob went close with a long range effort.

There was then the second and real turning point in the match. A Blues
breakaway saw them attack down the right. The ball was played inside
and finished past Will. A glance at the linesman who was flagging for
offside saw some sighs of relief that quickly evaporated when we
realised he was being over ruled by the referee.

2-0 down.

To their credit the Cougars then threw the kitchen sink at the Blues
and got one back through Luca, opening his account for the season. 2-1 and how the game would finish.

While we did not deserve to lose this game we did not deserve to win
it either, we barely raised a shot and gave their keeper very little
to do. A draw based on the match would have been a fair result.

We should not look for excuses and other parties to blame but realise
that we cost ourselves this match by not playing as we can and as we
have done in the past. We always look for positives and Louis was the
stand out performer today no question, full of drive and will to
attack. We needed all the lads to be up for it in the same way and to
perform as a team. Not to start get impatient with each other and
challenging the referee. That's not like us and is not something we
want to see again.

We lost this game through a failure to respect the opponent. When the
goal shower did not come frustration rose and to the Blues immense
credit they came at us and got their reward.

Let's put it right next week.

League Match v Lakeside U14's

LRFC Cougars (2) v (0) Lakeside U14's
Naunton Park

This was not a game for the purist. It would have been, for those old
enough to remember, better watched on Ceefax.

There were two moments of quality and both led to goals. The first
started by Willbo breaking up play deep in the Lakeside half. He fed
the ball to Freddie who played it inside to Jorge (when he scores we
will use his Latin name otherwise he's just George!) on the edge of
the area he turned and finished with a dipping curling effort over the
keeper but under the cross bar. A great finish and doubling his tally
for the season so far.

The game would stay at 1-0 until there were just less than 10minutes to play.

The second moment started from deep in our half where Tom picked up
the ball and played it to Louis in the wide left position. Tom
continued his run taking the return pass from Louis in his stride.
Powering forward he looked up and played a perfect ball for Daniel to
chase. Finally a quality ball for the strikers to latch onto and Dan
made no mistakes dispatching the ball into the far left corner as the
keeper closed down the near post. Three passes and a goal. 2-0 and how
the game would finish.

That only partly tells the story, the game could have been a very
different proposition as Lakeside on an early foray into our half had
a shot that crashed off the cross bar and out. A warning.

Where we failed in this game was as much down to panic as it was with
the defending that we faced. Unable to get our passing game going as
Lakeside were committed and energetic throughout we resorted to
hopeful balls forward which this Lakeside team can head back all day.
Where the ball was played hopefully on the ground they had pace and
strength at the back that was the equal of our strike force.

What was needed was quality.

The lads needed to trust that they could play their game and not try
and take Lakeside on at theirs. It is also worth noting that for all
the commitment that was on display there was not one bad tackle.
Lakeside played with excellent controlled aggression towards the ball.

While the game was at 1-0 we were nervy and resorting to last ditch
defending. George at the back was like a wasp all over the pitch.
Making tackles and winning the ball. Ben behind him continued his
early season good form showing lovely technique to win the ball and
play sensible passes. With Harvey, Freddie and Sam playing the
full-back positions we looked pact and capable to keep them at bay.

Freddie had another storming match. Starting at full-back he used his
(footballing) intelligence well which aligned with his physical
strength makes him a tough prospect to play against. Later in the game
he would move into midfield and there was a period where it seemed he
was a magnet for the ball. This excellent performance earned him the
man of the match.

As always we look for positives and there are always some. We headed
the ball well, we stood up well to a physical team and we scored two
excellent goals. What we need is more composure and trust of team
mates. Better quality of the final ball. While our strikers have speed
and technique they need better quality passes to be able to do the
damage we know they can.

This was a solid hard working performance and showed that we had
learned something from the defeat in the County Cup.

County Cup 22/09

County Cup - Charlton Rovers Reds (4) v (2) LRFC Cougars

Some match reports are easy to write, this one less so.

The lads have not been that down after a defeat in a long time.
Perhaps ever. They were a little shell shocked.

We knew that Charlton Rovers were going to start strong, as they had
in the league match a fortnight ago. We weathered that storm but
looked a little shaky this time. Under pressure in midfield we
struggled to keep possession or get meaningful ball to the strikers.

Defending was a little last ditch at times with Freddie and Ben
catching the eye with composure on the ball. Lewis centrally was
holding up well and his pace was required a couple of times. Dan G in
the other full back position started well.

In midfield the ploy was to play 2 holding midfielders, Jacob - ever
present - with in a new pairing Will D alongside him. This was
deliberate with Will instructed to play the deeper role. Win headers
and generally act as the stopper. He did this to great effect using
nice technique to sand-wedge the ball out to the wide players and up
front.

In front of the holding pair were Max, Louis and Harvey with then Luca
starting up front.

Our front players linked well and played some nice football but it was
too far away from the Charlton Rovers goal to be meaningful. When we
broke there was a lot of grass to run into which enabled defenders to
cover. When we did get clear it was Luca who played the ball out wide
around the keeper only to see his shot his the post and rebound out.

Charlton Rovers then scored twice in quick succession. A shot leaving
Will no chance and then a goal scrambled from our failure to clear a
corner. 2-0 up and momentum very much with them. We needed a goal
before half time to stay in the game.

Cue some changes, and, being a cup game the ethos around these was
very different. We needed to get back into and win the game. Dan G
made way for Harvey to drop back into defence, Luca came into central
midfield for Jacob and Dan H came on in attack.

We got a goal back before half time from the boot of Dan H, starting
on the bench due to a back injury, he unleashed his power and
outpacing a defender, rounding the keeper finished from distance. 2-1
at half time.

The second half instructions were to keep playing our way. To keep the
ball moving and be decisive. To not be outwitted or outmuscled in
midfield. There was an improvement.

Willbo moved to centre back for the struggling Lewis, Jacob came on in
midfield and Dan stayed up front. Max and Louis started to link more
and make progress down the left. Louis had a great match and went
close on a couple of occasions with some long range efforts. The
intelligence and movement around their link play was excellent.

Charlton Rovers took the kick-off and played the ball back. Dan H
burst forward robbing the defender and shooting powerfully across the
goal into the far bottom corner. 2-2 and game on.

The game was now more evenly contested in midfield with Luca and Jacob
both showing incredible box-to-box energy. George M, playing wide
right was getting more involved and playing some nice passes to the
front players. He would take a nasty whack in the face later for his
troubles but kept his composure and calm.

Neither team was able to make the breakthrough.

With a little more than 5 minutes remaining, just as both teams were
preparing for penalties, the breakthrough came. Charlton Rovers
latching onto a through ball that as we had all pushed forward saw him
finish high over Wills head. 3-2.

Kitchen sink time.

Pushing more players forward in search of an equaliser defending was
very much secondary. Another ball down to the Charlton Rovers winger
saw him bundle past Lewis and score from distance.

I guess you may as well lose 4-2 as 3-2.

The game finished shortly afterwards.

As always you look for positives and there were plenty. Freddie at
full back is growing into the position. Willbo, who was motm, showed
composure in both midfield and defence. Not frightened of using his
head he also has good technique and calmness on the ball. Out on the
left Louis is always a threat and his link play is excellent. A proper
winger who can weave his magic with a drop of his shoulder. You
realise how good he is in the physical games when the opposition
struggle to get near him. Ditto Max, he showed some great touches and
passing but was unable to play the killer ball. This was testament to
the Charlton Rovers defence that played a high line meaning we did a
lot of our attacking play too far for the goal.

Harvey is developing into a talker of the pitch - something we all
need to do more of. Luca showed good ability and incredible energy as
a box to box midfielder in the central positions. Jacob, as ever, just
never stops playing.

The games come thick and fast now and we have an opportunity to put
this behind us and move on with a league fixture this Sunday against
Lakeside. As long as we continue to learn from our victories and
defeats we are not going too far wrong.
