Jacob scores with header...

Under 15's League Cup
LRFC Cougars (4) v (2) Cashes Green

A very good point was made after this game; that last season this is a
game we would have lost. To put that in context at half time we were
1-0 down. About mid-way through the second half we were 3-1 up then
Cashes scored to make it 3-2.

At this point they started to throw the ball long and direct putting
us under pressure. Last season we would have capitulated. This season
is different and we scored a 4th goal following a break down the right
wing.

We won 4-2. We showed strength and tenacity against a Cashes team that
played very well and battled hard.

The game started in much the way we expected and following the same
pattern as our league match against them a couple of weeks ago. They
played direct with strength, purpose and very narrow. Freddie starting
at the back won most of the headers and, importantly put a name on
them too. He was at the heart of everything we did in that first half
in terms of providing a solid platform for us to start to play. With
George in formidable typical style winning tackles and springing
attacks we looked solid. Dan and Tom were the starting full backs both
in action defending then springing attacks down the flanks. In
midfield we started with solidity with Ryan, Jacob and Luca. Of the
wings, Taylor and Louis with Jorge up front.

We struggled to get a pattern of play going and the midfield three
were struggling to link. This was as much to the pressure being
exerted by Cashes as anything else.

Conditions did not help with the weather unseasonably warm and the
lads all flagging in the heat as the game progressed.

When we did get the ball we used the width and tried to get Jorge on
the move. This was a different sort of game for Jorge, leading the
line in a game where the quality of pass to him was not great. As
predicted. He worked incredibly hard for the team, chasing everything
and trying to link play.

As the half wore on we conceded, Cashes scoring from good wing play, a
ball played centrally and a good finish. 1-0 and how it would be at
half time.

With subs being made Max was playing in the number 10. Ryan made way
for Freddie, Lewis coming on at the back. At full back Sam had
replaced Tom then at half time Tom replaced Dan.

Second half and a complete turnaround in form. In less than 10 minutes
we were 2-1 up. Louis scoring both goals for close range after good
build up play down the right. Poachers goals.

We went 3-1 up with, possibly the goal of the game although the 4th
goal was pretty decent too.

Under pressure from Cashes we broke with pace down the right. The ball
played out wide Luca beat the full back and crossed to the centre
where Jacob scored a cushioned header. A great goal following
excellent team play. Notably our first headed goal of the season.

Jorge then went close, racing clear of the cashes defence to see his
shot very well saved by the keeper.

Then the pressure, relentless pressure from Cashes under which we held
well. The lads heading the ball and, more importantly, challenging for
the ball in the air. Tom had a mad moment, the ball bounced as he
raced onto it and misjudged the flight, rather than let it go over his
head his hand instinctively came up. Deliberate hand ball and a
booking. Funnily enough after that Tom played his best football of the
match, driving down the wing and winning tackles and showing that
energy that means he covers every blade of grass!

Cashes scored to make it 3-2. A lack of decisiveness in defence and a
goal. It happens that quickly.

The final goal of the game was almost as good as the first. Luca sent
clear after neat play from the defence and midfield. The keeper saved
his shot well, the ball rebounded to Max just inside the area. The
maestro hit a shot first time beyond the keeper and into the net 4-2
and game over.

A hard fought victory.

Freddie was MotM for dominating play. At centre back and in centre
midfield he was combative and strong with quality. As a unit we
defended well and we are always a threat on the break.

We will face Gotherington in the quarter finals of this competition in
November. Our next match will be, once again, against Cashes Green
this time in the County Cup.

We're playing very and need to keep up this momentum...

A tale of two Fenleys

Southside (0) v (2) LRFC Cougars

This was a game that on paper looked a formality. Playing a team that
had lost both their opening fixtures 6-1. But as someone once said the
games not played on paper.

Lining up in a 4-2-3-1 formation we looked to play the ball wide as
much as possible to create space in the middle. Jacob and Luca
deployed to the wings, Max in the number 10 and Jorge up front. The
midfield screen was provided by Ryan and Freddie.

The back 4 were Sam, Lewis, George and Dan. In goal, Will. On the
bench were Finn, Taylor and making his debut this season, Tom.

First half we were playing up the hill and against the wind. Southside
started strong and enjoyed the majority possession and were winning
the ball more in midfield. That said they did not create a chance and
Will, in goal, had little to do. As the half progressed we started to
impose our game on Southside and the game was being played mostly in
their half. Jorge went close with a half chance and there were other
chances for Jacob and Luca. In midfield Ryan was bustling and knitting
play with Freddie alongside him showing all his strength to win the
ball back. Max was enjoying more and more possession and gliding
through the game. The back 4 were secure although with clearances
being hit long by Southside created some hairy moments with an
inability to deal with the ball in the air.

The first half finished 0-0, in view of the conditions of the pitch
that felt like a good result.

Second half we were playing down hill and with the wind. The pattern
of play continued with personnel changes being made. Taylor had come
on midway through the first half for Jorge, then Tom for Dan, finally
Finn for Freddie with Jacob slotting into centre midfield.

We continued to create chances although nothing clear cut. Our shots
from distance were dealt with by the Southside keeper. The opening
goal came from a moment of magic. Jorge was in the inside left
position in the penalty area, adjusted his feet quickly and sent a
shot curling around the keeper in the top right corner of the goal.
1-0 and a great finish from an in-form player.

The flood gates odd not open.

Max was becoming more and more influential as Southside retreated
deeper and deeper. As was Tom breaking from deep and supporting play
on the left. Tom was kicked and fouled a number of times but could not
catch a break with the referee.

Finn was finding and exploiting space on the right and put in some
lovely crosses. We were playing well, enjoying the majority possession
but could not het the 2nd goal we needed. At 1-0 we looked precarious.

With less than 5 minutes remaining the final changes were made, Jacob
and Sam coming back on for Finn and Tom respectively with the
intention of securing the points. This almost backfired.

Southside in a rare surge into our half were around the edge of the
box with the lads defending a bit ragged and nervy. Step forward
Lewis. He won the tackle then drive out of our area and towards the
half way line. He played the ball down the left to Luca who cut in and
beat the keeper at the near post 2-0. Nerves settled and points
secured.

This was a game where the result could have been secured much easier
but for better finishing. Jorge went close, as did Taylor with a
couple chances, Max drew a great save from a corner from the keeper.
Finn had chances and there were shots from deep.

What we did do, though, was trust the way we play and keep going with
it. We got the reward as a result.

Tom was MotM for a performance where he was a nuisance to the
opposition in defending and supporting the left hand side well.

Other mentions to both goal scorers for moments of quality on both
strikes. Max who ran the show. Ryan and Freddie for their continued
industry in midfield, Jacob for versatility and quality in many
positions. As one player commented "Jacob can play anywhere on the
pitch". Taylor showed tenacity and nice skills, on a different day he
would have had a hat trick. The back 4 defended well and coped with a
few nervy moments, heading the ball remains something to be developed
but they are working well as a unit. Sam in particular had a strong
game and was starting to communicate with the players in front of him.
We need more of this.

Well played today, we played some decent football and were deserved
winners of a nervy game.

By virtue of the alphabet we remain top of the league with two cup
games up next, both against Cashes Green.

Sunday 21/09 League Match V Southside

This Sunday (21/09) we have a league fixture against Southside with the game to be played at Bournside School (Warden Hill Road, Cheltenham, GL51 3EF).

The squad (11+4) for this match is as follows...
  1. Will F
  2. George
  3. Lewis
  4. Freddie
  5. Dan G
  6. Ryan
  7. Luca
  8. Finn
  9. Jacob
  10. Ben
  11. Tom
  12. Sam
  13. Taylor
  14. Max
  15. Jorge

Southside may have struggled at the start of this season losing both their opening matches 6-1 but we know from experience that they are no pushovers and have, probably, the fastest defence in the land.

Lets meet at 1:30pm so that we can set-out the team, warm-up and be ready for the 2pm kick-off. If anyone picks up an injury, illness, strain or hang nail before Sunday please let me know.

So long Will...

With the season only a couple of weeks old we have to say farewell to Will Tunnicliff who with the demands of his sporting commitments cannot continue to play for us. He will now spend his Sundays relaxing and recovering, rumours that he has taken a subscription to the Sunday Times and bought a tea-pot remain as yet unsubstantiated.

We signed Will in October 2013 and he made an immediate impact scoring 2 goals in each of his first three matches. He would go on to score 9 in 11 appearances for us at U14's. He has started both our games this season and scored a memorable goal against Rodborough on the opening day of the season.

We all wish Will well and maybe we will see him back one day...

A game of two halves....

LRFC Cougars U15 (6) v (1) Cashes Green
Own Goal 1
Jorge 3
Louis 1
Freddie 1

Today there was a massive contrast between the two halves of football.
First half and, as expected Cashes came at us strong and fast. They
were first to every ball, appealing every decision and strong into
every challenge. We struggled to get a foot in the game being over run
in midfield and under pressure at the back. Lewis and Ben showing
great strength and power to keep Cashes at bay, when they were
bypassed Will, in goal, was equal to the long shots. This continued
for 5-10 minutes and then against the run of play we went 1-0 up.

Max driving forward from the number 10 position out to the left
channel. He evaded a Cashes tackle, that could have killed a less
nimble player, and crossed the ball. The Cashes defender playing it
into his own net. The pattern of play continued with Cashes dominant
and the Cougars limited to playing passes for the striker to chase.

Cashes equalised before the half was out, finishing well from a ball
played in from the right wing. 1-1.

Half time.

A rest and water In the shade - the lads challenged to play their way
and not revert to the opposition. This is typical of how we tend to
play, well against teams that play a more passing game and more direct
against teams that play that way. We are not equipped to play that
type of football with, in general the opposition being around half a
foot and maybe half a stone a man bigger. Now that the lads no longer
bring lucozade to matches maybe we need to switch it to baby bio??

Second half and a very different game. A couple of changes enforced by
injury saw, first, Freddie drop back to centre back, Jacob swapping
into centre midfield. Then Ryan also had to take one for the team and
play centre back. This saw a significant reshuffle with Taylor moving
out wide right, Jorge moving up front and Luca dropping back into
centre midfield.

We started to get more involved in the play. Jorge scored an excellent
hat trick, for all the quality in his finishing, particularly the
second goal, they were team goals. Building the play from midfield,
out wide where Taylor was a willing runner, and then quality into the
box. Sam was proving to be an excellent outlet in right back and there
was even the start of communication between the back four.

We could have had more, as Cashes tired and we grew in stature the
quality on the ball that we have started to tell.

Louis would score on his season debut (surely a goal is better than
anything you can do with a golf club), Freddie would round off the
scoring with a goal for close range. Quite what he was doing up there
when he was playing centre back? Possibly been watching too much
Gerrard Pique, if he turns up with a beard or a girlfriend called
Shakira next week we will know.

Will, in goal, had a moment (one for the cameras), with a shot driven
from left to right he dived full stretch and tipped the ball onto the
post from where we were then able to clear our lines.

There was a lot to learn and admire today. A number of the lads played
in different positions. Not only playing I these positions but doing
well. Ryan and Freddie at centre back own headers and tackles and were
playing the ball out of defence. Luca played striker and midfield to
great effect and was perpetual motion. Jacob played wide right then
more familiar in central midfield. Taylor and Jorge both played up
front and then wide, Will T played the full left side. Versatility and
enthusiasm all over the pitch. Finn played wide right and started to
show better skill, increased fitness will see him achieve better
things as the season progresses.

Jorge was MotM for his hat trick that propelled us to victory. Taylor
had a strong game and was a threat with his willingness to run. Luca
showed great energy and skill to drive from deep. Freddie and Ryan
were strong and forming a good understanding playing in midfield and
then at the back.

We can build on this and continue in this trajectory. We have improved
since the friendly and have plenty of options all over the field. This
is the strongest squad we have had and it showed today once we started
to play.

Training - Wednesday 10th September

.....will be at Naunton Park from 1815-1930.

Nobody looked more surprised than George.....

Rodborough Youth U15 (2) v (8) LRFC Cougars

If Carlsberg did youth football pitches then this would have been very
close to being one of theirs. A quite stunning setting, up the hill
out of Stroud a piece of flat ground with an impeccable pitch marked
out. The views across the valley quite stunning. With early September
temperatures hitting 20c and little shade this was going to be a
demanding fixture.

With 4 substitutes the pre-match talk was about how we have, possibly,
the strongest squad we have ever had with competition in all positions
and lads that can play in a couple of positions. That versatility has
always been incredibly useful. That we were able to make a number of
changes through the game without disrupting the pattern of play too
much just serves to prove that.

The starting 11 were Will in goal, the back four of Dan G, Lewis,
George and Will T. The holding pair were Freddie and Ryan. The
attacking trio of Jorge, Max and Jacob lining up behind Luca as
striker. On the bench were Ben, Finn, Sam and bucking the trend with
an extra syllable Taylor.

The game kicked off and immediately we pressed Rodborough. The outlet
was Jacob on the right who was linking with Luca at every opportunity.
They both went close with early efforts. Just pulling shots wide. On
the left Jorge was linking with Max and starting to get onto good
positions. After sustained pressure the opening goal came totally
against the run of play.

Rodborough cleared the ball long, as they chased I the ball downfield
there was miscommunication between Will and Dan G with the ball being
played into our own net. No drama. We had been on top and there was a
long way to go.

We equalised in less than 5 minutes. Luca receiving the ball in the
box to score low past the keeper. Confidence restored we were then in
control of the match. Restricting Rodborough to long clearances down
field. We did struggle when the ball was in the air but were composed
enough to regain possession and try to attack again.

Jorge would score our second goal on the stroke of 20 minutes just
before he was substituted. The sub was planned well before he scored.
The same is also true of Lewis who late in the second half barrelled
his way through the middle of the pitch and struck a ferocious shot
that left the keeper no chance. If there wasn't a net the ball would
now be orbiting the earth such was the power. Immediately after he was
substituted!

Taylor scored the third from the wide left position, finishing well
over the keeper. A competitive debit in which as the game wore on his
confidence grew.

Then...... On the stroke of half time there was a moment so incredible
that even the architect of it was surprised. We had a free kick about
5 yards to the left of centre and about 10 yards outside the box. The
exchange, I believe, went something like this....

George "can I take it?"
Freddie "yeah, have a pop"
Ref "you can take it quick or they will be able to set a wall"
George ran from deep and smashed the ball with his right foot, it flew
like a missile into the top left corner. The keeper had no chance.

As uh turned to celebrate the look of surprise on his face was only
matched by everyone else's in the ground! A special goal.

Half time and we made more changes. Ryan, also making his competitive
debut, taking a well earned breather. Finn came on in the wide right.

The message at half time was to pass the ball more. With the
temperature not abating the ball needed to do the work not the
players. We started well although, smelling goals, this quickly
evaporated as the tendency to take on too many players started to kick
in.

While this was a great opening result it wasn't necessarily a great
performance as we tend to drop to the level of our opponents rather
than impose our way. We pass the ball and use energy, technical
ability and pace. When we play teams that are more direct we need to
remember that as that is how we will get our rewards.

The next goal was probably the team move of the game. Picking up the
ball from defence Sam (excellent at full back and latterly when we
switched to 3 at the back) brought it forward, linked with Finn who
played it inside, there were then 4 or 5 further passes with the ball
then played to Luca. He rode a couple of tackles, showed quick feet
and finished under pressure. This was an excellent team goal and shows
how passing the ball quickly and with purpose can get you goals. There
was still time for two more goals, Will T finishing over the keeper
with a lovely shot from distance and Jorge completing his brace with a
goal high to the right of the keepers dive.

There will be sterner tests in this division but to start with an
emphatic victory is all you can ask for. Will's distribution both
short and long was excellent. George and Lewis look strong at centre
back, also in full back positions we are well covered with Dan G, Sam,
Will T and Freddie all playing there today. We still need to win more
balls in the air and against better opposition will be punished for
some of our defending. There is also a greater need for communication
and trust to play the way you are facing. We do not always need to
dribble out of defence or play the Hollywood pass.

Midfield we looked very strong, Ryan and Freddie a formidable
partnership all about tenacity and power. Freddie is fast becoming an
enforcer in the team and Ryan, alongside him, looked like he had been
playing with us for years.

The front 4 created lots of chances and but for better finishing could
have scored a lot more. It's early season though and it takes a game
or two to get your eye in. It was fortunate that today it did not
really matter. That they made chances and kept making them was more
important than necessarily taking them all.

George was MotM for that goal.

It seems churlish to criticise the team after winning 8-2 but the old
problems are still there. When the ball is played long by the
opposition keeper we need to win the header and head it back. As soon
as we let it bounce we put ourselves under pressure, against better
teams that will count. The same is true in midfield. Up front we need
to be quicker with our passing. Once we have created a moment of space
release the ball, as soon as we hold onto it the opposition can get
back into shape and the moment is gone. Again, against better teams we
will be punished for taking too many touches.

Next up we are home to Cashes Green lets play with the intensity and
drive that we did today and iron out these small issues in the play
and really put on a show.

Well done to the lads today - a good win of the opening day is about
as good as it gets.

Friendly Fixture :: LRFC Cougars v Kings Stanley

Sunday 31st August we had a friendly match against Kings Stanley who
play in, I think, the North Wiltshire League. This was to be the first
main session of pre-season with training sessions cancelled as many of
the lads were on holiday late into the school holidays.

We had agreed to play 4 x 20minute games to give the lads a breather
and also to make any adjustments that we wanted. Against, what we knew
would be a tough team, we lined up in a conservative 4-5-1 formation.
This formation saw us defensively quite solid but lacking when trying
to break forward as supporting the lone striker was difficult. KS were
dangerous on the break and a very physically powerful team.

The first game started, as you'd expect, at quite a pace. Both teams
up for it on a perfect morning. Blue skies, firm pitches and little
wind. Both teams trying to pass the ball and play football. There
wasn't a bad tackle throughout the game despite both teams playing
full throttle.

We started strongly with Ryan, making his 11-a-side debut for us,
catching the eye in centre midfield. Plenty of drive from deep and
always looking to thread the ball to the striker. At the back we
looked solid with Lewis and George picking up from where they left
last season. At full back Freddie and Dan G were quick to push on if
the opportunity arose. What we did show though was tactical nous. So
the messages about watching your team mates and not all bombing
forward was starting to show. If we broke up the right then Freddie
would push on with the defence and left back shuffling across. This is
what what we want to see.

Most of our good play came down the right hand side where Finn was
able to get on the ball and create some space with a trick, then look
to play the ball infield or forward. This was Finns return to the team
after a year out and showed that he is one of our more skilful
players. Once he has his fitness sorted he will be a significant
player for this team.

The first game finished 0-0. In reality we didn't look like
threatening their goal, restricted to a couple of long shots.
Something the lads should do more if they are in and around the box.
We were on occasion reluctant to have a go preferring to try and walk
it in.

Will F kept us in the game with a quite excellent double save. With
the KS striker bearing down on him in a 1-on-1 Will came off his line
and stayed tall, the KS striker hit his shot which Will pushed onto
the post. The ball still live KS had another go Will equal to it again
pushing it onto the crossbar and out.

The second game we continued with 4-5-1 bringing Jorge on for Taylor
up front and changing personnel in the middle to give Charlie (Will
T's cousin) a game I centre midfield. Jorge offered more presence up
front and was able to hold the ball up more. By the last game we were
playing 4-4-2 with Taylor and Jorge up front looking much more
dangerous, Jorge providing the outlet and Taylor, looking much more
confident, working off him. Something we will need to consider more to
get the best out of our attacking options this season.

The second match played very similar to the first and with the referee
about to blow the whistle we conceded to lose 1-0. The ball fired in
high from a tight angle. A decent finish.

With a few players missing we lacked some depth in the squad and in
particular in the defensive positions. Lewis needed a break with some
back trouble so Freddie, who was outstanding all morning, moved to
centre back with Will T dropping to full back (even his granddad said
this is his best position). Through this game we were a little
unbalanced with both Freddie and George more inclined to attacking
play we were left exposed through the middle. We lost this game 2-0
with the second coming from a gap in the centre of defence the KS
striker running through and lobbing the ball over Will's head as he
closed him down. A FIFA goal you might say.

We lost this one 2-0.

The final game and heads were down although we had played well. We
couldn't match the KS physicality all over the pitch but we showed in
patches that when we passed the football they struggled to get near
us. What we needed to do was show more confidence in our game and work
to impose that more.

For the final game we played Freddie in centre midfield. He was a
revelation and drew admiring comments from some of the spectators. He
started to mix it more with the KS midfielders with his physical
presence giving them something different to worry about.

With Taylor and Jorge up front we looked more progressive and had
better options. We would struggle to stretch the play with pace but
both players have good skills on the ball. Jorge in particular looked
more up for it than he had done, after a rotten injury struck year
lets hope we see the best of him. He scored red our goal to put us 1-0
up finishing over the keepers head with the outside of his right foot
from just inside the area. We continued to push forward, linking with
Taylor and Jorge early but unable to get a second goal.

The sucker punch came with a KS goal to level the scores.

Overall we played well against a very good team. This was our first
outing of the season and we did not look too rusty. Missing some key
players meant that rotation and cover, particularly in defensive
positions, was difficult. Thanks to both Fergus and Charlie, coming in
like the cavalry to help us out. Both played well and settled into the
way of playing.

There were excellent performances from Will in goal, Freddie (possibly
our best player on the day) and George at the back. The debutants all
played well and settled into the team - we will need to adapt our play
a little this season to get the best out of all of them.

We should be confident as we move to the season opener this Sunday
against Rodborough. We will not face many teams as strong as KS and
with a few more games under our belts and the full squad available
would be a different prospect.
